WHAT WE DO

SafeHouse Denver’s mission is to assist adults, children, and youth in reclaiming their right to a life free from domestic violence. Established in 1977, SafeHouse Denver is the only agency in the city and county of Denver that provides a full continuum of care to adults, children and youth experiencing domestic violence.

In support of our mission, SafeHouse Denver strives to:

  • Intervene in domestic violence with trauma-informed services that empower adults, children and youth to live free from domestic abuse.
  • Prevent domestic violence through education and community organizing efforts that foster and support a broad movement for violence-free communities.
  • Facilitate an interactive, collaborative community response to domestic violence that identifies victims earlier, makes victim services more accessible, and builds community awareness and accountability.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the overall leadership, management, and planning of the organization. SafeHouse Denver’s current CEO is retiring after 15 years of exemplary service, and we are seeking our next leader. The SafeHouse Denver team is dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and maintaining a strong, stable organization. Our ideal candidate will advance our mission while maintaining our valued workplace culture of support, trust, and collaboration.

The Chief Executive Officer reports directly to SafeHouse Denver’s Board of Directors and works closely with staff members and the Board to fulfill SafeHouse Denver’s mission. The Chief Executive Officer has overall responsibility for approximately 30 dedicated staff members and a $2.2 million+ annual budget.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop and implement long-range and strategic planning process with the staff and Board of Directors.
  • Build upon, implement, and support effective and efficient processes, systems, and infrastructure to increase revenue, control expenses, enhance productivity, maximize resources, and avoid crises.
  • Attract, recruit, select, develop, motivate, retain, and reward a high-quality staff to function and respond to SafeHouse Denver priorities through effective leadership.
  • Sustain a high performing team focused on SafeHouse Denver’s evolving needs and create a clear vision for the organization; assist staff in relating their individual work to the SafeHouse Denver mission marked by collaboration, transparency, and opportunities to learn.
  • Maintain a positive organizational culture that values and recognizes success along with a strong self-care focus.
  • Manage and oversee all operations across three facilities within the organization; ensure all core programs are well-functioning and in alignment with SafeHouse Denver’s mission and goals.
  • Oversee financial management of the agency, including all required financial reporting and maintenance of established reserve funds.
  • Ensure all grant reporting, government funding requirements, and financial reporting are satisfactorily completed in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the annual operating budget; ensure it is funded through appropriate channels and established goals are met.
  • Cultivate key relationships with community partners and donors to broaden levels of giving and base of our effective contacts.
  • Oversee all fund development strategies in conjunction with the Board and Chief Development Officer, including creation of a comprehensive development plan.
  • Provide information and recommendations to the Board for setting or revising SafeHouse Denver’s goals and objectives, operating policies, strategic planning and program priorities; attend and participate in monthly Board meetings.
  • Help maintain Board diversity and assist recruiting directors with essential skill sets.
  • Assist in other Board development activities, including obtaining the commitment of new Directors, Board orientation and training, and ensuring effective communication between appropriate management staff and Directors.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in domestic violence support to ensure SafeHouse Denver remains relevant and focused on its mission.
  • Represent SafeHouse Denver routinely and professionally with the media and at local, state, and national events and initiatives through attendance, public speaking, serving on committees, and presenting information sessions.
  • Oversee all public relations, community relations, and communication strategies.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to increase community awareness of the issue of domestic violence and of available services.
  • Create strong working relationships with many different constituencies and community members including donors, law enforcement agencies, legislators, government agencies, corporations, foundations, and other nonprofits and friends.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO OUR ORGANIZATION

  • 10 years minimum progressive and successful experience in leadership roles in nonprofit agencies, lived or work experience in domestic violence or victim services arena is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, nonprofit management, or related field; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of strong financial management skills, including knowledge of all fiduciary responsibilities of a nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated success with implementation of fundraising strategies, including individual, foundation and grants, and corporate donor solicitation and planned giving programs; experience in developing and executing effective capital campaigns and other long-term fundraising activities.
  • Strategic mindset with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing long-range strategic plans.
  • Ability to drive, change, lead, and manage a growing organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and exceptional ability to be decisive while working collaboratively with donors, community leaders, board members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Proven experience with personnel management and staff development showing responsiveness, compassion, and appreciation.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a diverse organization.
  • Demonstrated success in effective Board management including recruitment of directors.
  • Expert persuasive written and verbal communication skills and ability to tailor communication style to diverse audiences.
  • Compelling public speaker with ability to represent SafeHouse Denver in a wide variety of forums.
  • Demonstrated success at cultivating strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and creating partnerships at all levels within the organization to achieve results.
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.

  • Expected annual hiring range of $125,000 - $150,000
