Salary Range

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range from $51.86 to $70.64 per hour.

The Position

This is a position for the Middle College at Skyline College (MCSC) in the Strategic Partnerships & Workforce Development Division. The San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) seeks employees who value working in a collegial, collaborative environment, guided by a commitment to helping all students achieve success. The MCSC strongly encourages collaboration across disciplines to create integrated, interdisciplinary learning experiences. MCSC faculty members are expected to be knowledgeable about and willing to use, different learning and teaching methods as appropriate to the discipline. Faculty and student services staff are expected to be active and engaged knowledge-builders through professional development. They will also model the skills they want their students to learn, including collaboration, intellectual curiosity, self-regulation, and meta-cognition, while effectively using technology in the learning process. They collaborate to design and deliver an innovative multidisciplinary curriculum that places emphasis on “authentic” learning opportunities that prepare learners for college, life and work in the 21st Century. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach classes as assigned based on the areas of self-development, career planning, social adjustment, personal management, community service and general life/skills knowledge

2. Provide learning support services and activities

3. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours

4. Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies

5. Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college, division, and programs

6. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred

• California Single Subject Teaching Credential

• Current EL Authorization

• Meets Highly Qualified Teacher status

• Ability to communicate effectively with persons of diverse cultures and language groups, and people who have disabilities. Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of high school students as part of innovative early college programming, including those with disabilities, in both day and evening settings.

Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:

1. Recent successful experience in teaching and providing general classroom guidance in academic strategies, i.e. critical thinking, organization skills, time management, collaboration, studying skills, note taking, career education and pathways, and college readiness

2. Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the MCSC

3. Acceptance of the division’s and MCSC’s commitment to established academic standards

4. Ability to maintain current records of student attendance and progress

5. Evaluates student progress based primarily on achievement of performance objectives

6. Adheres to MCSC and SMCCCD policies and procedures and state regulations

7. Commitment to using writing as an evaluative assessment

8. Knowledge of the use of technology in teaching career and learning strategies

9. Ability to use and develop teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and engage students actively in product-based learning, encouraging them to become independent, creative learners with higher-order thinking skills

10. Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences

11. Ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and to develop methods for assessing students’ achievement of these outcomes

12. Ability to organize and teach both theoretical and practical applications of the subject-matter in ways appropriate to students’ abilities

13. Acknowledges professional responsibility to support and supervise co-curricular activities
