Summary

The Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) is a first-in-the-nation basic science department focused on the sciences related to learning across multiple levels of scale (i.e. individual, group, organization, region, nation). DLHS works to improve health in systemic ways by advancing the sciences that make learning effective, routine, and efficient. DLHS is seeking a highly motivated, talented researcher with experience in Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Learning Analytics and eXtended Reality to join a dynamic research team with expertise in learning sciences, medical education, and computer science. This NSF-funded postdoctoral position involves developing and evaluate a novel debriefing system that aims to capture and visualize multimodal data streams from the fully immersive multi-user VR simulation environment to evaluate learners’ cognitive (e.g., clinical decision-making) and behavioral (e.g., situational awareness, communication) processes. Through this new multimodal debriefing system, instructors will be able to provide new insights and personalized feedback to clinicians during post-simulation debriefing sessions to allow for more meaningful reflection, targeted intervention, and rapid development of these complex skills in service to patients who suffer sudden medical emergencies.

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will be an integral part of a team consisting of researchers with expertise in medical education, health sciences and computer science and will work on a highly collaborative research project with multiple opportunities to interact with experts and thought leaders in their respective fields.

The candidate will be responsible for: 1) conducting a human-centered design study with trainees and faculty to refine the concept of a multimodal debriefing system 2) helping engineer and evolve an unobtrusive multi-modal sensor-based data collection system; and 3) conducting a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the potential of this study’s debriefing system to improve clinical knowledge and teamwork skills. The candidate will also contribute to writing research papers and technical reports based on his/her work.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in computer science, statistics, learning science, or another field with relevance to higher education research (e.g., learning analytics, human factors, social or behavioral sciences).

The successful applicant should have a strong background in some or all of the following subjects, or a related discipline:

  • social signal processing
  • machine learning
  • affective computing
  • experience working with models for sensor and/or data fusion is a bonus
  • experience working with Unity for augmented reality or virtual reality apps
  • strong programming skills in at least one relevant language (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, R, etc.)
  • experience with data mining, data analytics and visualization tools.

The qualified candidate will have: a proven track record in carrying out excellent research; a strong publication record in international conferences and journals (e.g. human-computer interaction/CSCW); 3+ years programming experience; the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; an affinity with the relevant medical education research; and an interest in communicating their research results to a wider audience.

Background Screening
