Essential Job Duties
Essential responsibilities for the position include planning, marketing, conducting, and evaluating educational programs in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for Henderson County.
The emphasis of the Family and Consumer Sciences program is on nutrition, food safety, health and wellness, local foods and cooking, chronic disease reduction, and volunteer management. The position will conduct viable, proactive research-based educational programs in these areas for both adult and youth audiences. The position will collaborate with Extension agents in the region on common educational program initiatives. All agents are expected to have a youth component in their programming.
There is interest in food safety information from both home audiences and the restaurant trade. The ability of clients to obtain training in an approved food safety certification program is expected.
This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 37.5-hour per week position. The position is 100% funded by a combination of revenue from state and county funding.

The position demands a responsible, energetic, and self-motivated individual with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in Family & Consumer Science.
Other Duties Expected
- Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs using appropriate delivery methods and technologies, including integrated and multidisciplinary programming.
- Outcomes and impacts are to be documented and marketed.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service as an educational agency and its implications for programming in the county.
- Market county Extension programs and services to the community using various media.
- Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations to meet the specialized needs of the community.
- Maintain liaison with civic organizations, related businesses, informal educational organizations, and other voluntary groups.
- Ensure that the FCS program follows, where appropriate, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T State University, state, county, and national laws, policies, regulations, and guidelines.
- Actively seek extramural funding for the FCS program.
- Subject matter responsibilities as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Travel within the county is required; district and state travel is required occasionally. Must be able to provide personal reliable transportation.

Work ScheduleMonday - Friday 8:30am– 5pm business hours, with occasional flex hours to attend night and/or weekend events.
One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Department Required Skills
The extension FCS agent must have the ability to work with diverse audiences, connect well with people and be a team player. He/she must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Must possess good written and oral communication skills. Must be able to multitask, switch tasks quickly and set priorities. Must have good organizational skills and a high degree of computer literacy.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
M.S. at the time of hiring is desirable with at least one degree in Family & Consumer Science or a related field. Experience in nutrition, food safety practices, and working with youth are all beneficial. Knowledge and experience in communications, presentations, public relations/marketing, leadership, time management, organization, technology, networking, and resource development preferred.
The candidate should possess a high degree of subject matter competence, handle multiple demands, and set priorities in accordance with the mission and philosophy of NC Cooperative Extension.
Must be a team member dedicated to supporting a positive and creative work environment. Previous Cooperative Extension experience and a background in FCS is an assets.
The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently. The job also requires sustained periods of standing and sitting and occasional periods of kneeling, stooping, and reaching. The job occasionally requires exposure to extreme heat and humidity and exposure to the sun. The person must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. The job requires appropriate visual acuity with or without correction and dexterity to perform the normal duties of the job.

Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation required and must be maintained.
