About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair and building, and equipment modifications to the University. 
 
The purpose of Grounds & Building Services is to provide quality services to the NC State University community. These services include new construction, renovations, and upgrades of existing areas, and maintenance of landscape across campus.

Essential Job Duties

This position’s job duties will but, but are not limited to:
  • Perform plastering duties, which may include, but are not limited to preparation, installation, and repair of drywall, block, brick and removal of old plaster as necessary. 
  • Perform painting duties, which may include, but are not limited to, painting of buildings, fixtures, and equipment. Abilities needed include determining proper use of brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. Must be skilled in the use of and care of tools used in the painting tradepaint brushes, rollers, spray gun, putty knife, scrapers, etc. Must be skilled in the mixing of paints and in matching and blending colors. Mix paint appropriately to match colors and ensure the appropriate shades. Determine exact amount of paint that will be needed and how many coats of paint to apply. Must have a good knowledge concerning the differences between coatings and their use. 
  • Clean, sand, patch, prime and prepare areas to be painted. After the work of sanding, puttying or patching has been completed by self or others, check surfaces before beginning the next phase of work. 
  • Ability to set up and break down scaffolding for job. Serve as lead worker on job site. Maintain a safe, clean and non-disruptive work area. Set up scaffolding or ladders. 
  • Assist sign painters and painters as required or assigned. 

Other Responsibilities

This position has designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate verbally effectively with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. 
  • Journeyman level commercial plastering/painting experience. 
  • Skilled in the mixing of paints and in matching and blending colors. 
  • Knowledge concerning the differences between coatings and their use. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 plus pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations. 

Preferred Qualifications

Two to three years journey level commercial plastering/painting experience. 

Required License or Certification

Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
