Faculty Business Manager
The Faculty of Arts & Humanities is seeking an individual with significant experience of the higher education sector in a business support (or similar) role to lead the business support team.
The Faculty Business Manager role works directly in support of the Executive Dean and Director of Operations to help the Faculty to achieve its strategic and operational aims. They will do this primarily by:
- Utilising their strong data-skills to support planning and development within the Faculty, providing to faculty leadership with research, analysis, insight and advice.
- Utilising their strong process management skills to design and implement robust and effective processes to delivery of operational goals in line with business requirements. They will do this with an eye to the faculty’s internal and external interfaces, partnering with broader university services, adopting a continuous improvement mindset to improve and refine as they go, and encouraging and enabling that mindset throughout their team.
- Deploying their strong leadership and people management skills to achieve the above objectives, and to lead the faculty’s business support teams in adopting the culture above.
The postholder will oversee all areas of the business function, which includes finance, procurement, auditing, HR, space, health and safety, business continuity, information and data management. They will hold responsibilities for ensuring the effective and responsible management of resources (including finances, staff, student numbers), and will be responsible for ensuring the Faculty’s compliance with internal and external regulations and laws throughout their remit. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate extensive experience in holding responsibilities like those above, ideally in a Higher Education context.

This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.
- To lead and set direction for members of the professional services team with responsibility for business support, including the line management of relevant staff
- To oversee all internal procedures and processes relating to the line management of the relevant members of the Faculty professional services team, conducting reviews and updating as necessary in response to changes in the internal or external environment
- To oversee the Faculty-wide Business Support function, working to integrate it across silos and aligning activity with the business support function in other faculties and the broader Business Support Network
- To support the establishment of clear and effective governance arrangements – from instituting new processes and procedures, through to the organisation of committee management as required
- To continuously improve processes and procedures and promote a culture of continuous improvement to enhance service delivery, effectiveness, and efficiency
- To take responsibility for contributing to and operationalising institution-wide initiatives from systems and processes to policy and ensuring the effective dissemination and communication of those initiatives
- To build collaborative and constructive relationships and networks with key partners across the organisation, in pursuit of the Faculty’s objectives and to contribute to institutional decision making
- To lead on information management, managing efforts to ensure data integrity, compliance with GDPR and freedom of information (FOI), and subject access requests (SAR).
- To coordinate planning on business continuity for the Faculty, maintaining the Business Continuity Plan and holding regular exercises
- Finance & Resources
- To manage the Faculty’s resources in compliance with King’s financial policies and long-term objectives, and advise the Executive Dean and Director of Operations accordingly
- To manage the allocation of budgets and the subsequent monitoring and reporting of the School/Faculty’s financial resources
- To work closely with the Senior Finance Business Partner to produce regular and appropriate reporting and analysis
- To provide support in identifying and developing potential new income streams and areas of growth for the Faculty (including statistical analysis)
- To monitor the Faculty’s strategic performance against planning targets and key performance indicators, to produce reports as necessary, and to advise the Executive Dean and Faculty Operating Officer on any issues that might affect the meeting of these targets
- To support the production of the School/Faculty’s strategic business plan, specifically in relation to student number planning, establishment staffing plans, additional teaching, and non-pay costs
- To enable and develop data and analysis to enable strategic planning for the Executive Dean, Director of Operations, Heads of Cluster, and Vice-Deans
- To manage and lead Faculty HR administration ensuring the correct application of procedures in for example recruitment, probation, promotion, appraisals, and recognition pay in coordination with the HR People Partner
- To establish and develop local HR processes and procedures where required for the Faculty in coordination with the HR People Partner and other faculty business leads
- To ensure compliance with HR processes, procedures, and regulations across the faculty
- To oversee the funding of local space projects and to coordinate with other professional services and academic leads in leveraging funding from King’s for strategic projects
- Where appropriate to oversee the management of, and planning in relation to, the Faculty’s space and estates portfolio, providing analysis and reports to inform decision making, and ensuring that space is used effectively and in accordance with King’s policy
- Where appropriate to manage, and report on, local space and infrastructure matters including the allocation of space, resource requirements, minor estates work, obtaining estimates and the advising on long term space requirements
- Where appropriate to ensure that facilities and resources are in place to meet the needs of staff and students
Health & Safety
- To oversee Health and Safety within the Faculty and ensure compliance with institutional policies and priorities
- To ensure that appropriate processes, monitoring, and communications are in place across the Faculty, in liaison with Health and Safety Services
- To co-operate with any audits or reviews, both internal and external and lead on the implementation of any recommendations across the Faculty
- To act as an evacuation marshal
- To act as Faculty Safety Officer
- To lead sustainability activity across the Faculty, encouraging and enabling a network of sustainability champions
- To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required

Skills, knowledge, and experience
1. Experience of working as a manager in a higher education or similar environment
2. Highly numerate and literate with strong attention to detail; enjoys working with data and finding ways to present this information effectively to a wide-ranging audience, backed by strong IT skills
3. Strong ability to learn quickly and comprehend complex information
4. Significant experience of managing budgets and monitoring and acting on financial performance
5. Strong leadership skills; experience of leading and managing change and developing successful teams
6. Significant experience in leading the development and the application of policies and processes
7. Significant experience of delivering an efficient and effective service to stakeholders
8. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to interact with a wide variety of people in a professional and assured manner; excellent written and spoken communication skills, with a high standard of English
9. Strong ability to work independently and as part of multiple teams and networks
10. Highly proactive, methodical, and flexible approach with strong attention to detail
