Essential Job Duties The Research Specialist for the NC Foundation Seed program will assist in all activities of seed production of various small grains, soybean, and peanut. The incumbent will assist in seed harvest operations that would include but are not limited to; hauling grain from assigned contract growers and unloading at the warehouse into large grain bins or harvesting small plot seed increases with the combine. The incumbent must know North Carolina Seed Certification Standards for various small grains, peanuts, and soybean. They must have a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brakes to drive large trucks for hauling seed and have a pesticide applicators license with a seed treatment.
The Specialist will assist in seed conditioning to remove weed seed, other crop seed, and immature and poor quality seed to the point of quality seed production. They will be responsible to facilitate modifying the seed processing line to handle the various pieces of equipment used for conditioning. The incumbent will also assist with the maintenance of the various seed storage facilities and machinery for conditioning.
The incumbent will also need to have knowledge of complex machinery that must come from on-the-job experience. These machines are unique to the seed industry. They must be knowledgeable and competent to learn how to operate complex machinery and vehicles such as tractors, planters, spray rigs, and combines. The incumbent should be familiar with certification standards and how they apply to various crops for fields of seed production to pass which would include isolation distance from similar crops and limited disease and weed incidence, and limitations on off-type plants.
This position is located in Zebulon, NC. Other Responsibilities The incumbent will also assist with data tabulation for presentation to growers and the Board of Directors of NC Foundation Seed. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Other Required Qualifications - Ability to drive a forklift, tractor, combine, large truck and operate machinery as a welder, grinder, etc.

Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree degree or an equivalent combination of training and/or relevant experience.

Required License or Certification - Valid CDL Class B (Airbrakes) license or the ability to obtain one.
- Valid NC Pesticide Applicators License (Seed Treatment Endorsement) or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
