Development Director

At Pasado’s Safe Haven, we envision a world where every animal is recognized as an individual with the right to live free from abuse, abandonment, neglect, and exploitation. Pasado’s Safe Haven is a non-profit organization which adheres to and exceeds sector best practices and enjoys the highest accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, Guide Star and Charity Navigator. As Pasado’s Safe Haven heads into the final, critical phase of a major capital campaign, we are seeking an experienced Development Director to join our dynamic team.


The Development Director is the strategist who will build and execute the fundraising plans that make our vital program work possible. This person will lead the team working to systematically grow and strengthen the organization’s overall fundraising capacity and ensure diverse and sustainable fundraising support. Responsibilities include:

  • Create and execute a comprehensive, annual fundraising plan to support the organization’s goals by achieving all fundraising goals. The donor-centric development plan components include specific dollar goals, strategies and tactics for success in both the Annual Fund and Capital Campaign goals;
  • Serve as the annual fund lead, providing strategic segmentation and messaging guidance to staff executing key deliverables related to “Community giving” vehicles;
  • Serve as the capital campaign lead, ensuring the organization stays on track to achieve its $10M goal on schedule by hitting specific fundraising benchmarks; Effectively integrate planned capital campaign efforts into overall donor strategy and tactics;
  • Support major gifts officers in achieving their portfolio goals;
  • Ensure maintenance of all development files and records regarding prospective contributors on all levels and assure that all other necessary records are available as needed for smooth development, reporting and auditing operations;
  • Manage all necessary administrative systems and procedures to track, record, report, acknowledge, and recognize all contributions and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all fundraising, prospect and donor communications;
  • Provide strategic counsel and reports to Executive Director to evaluate effectiveness of plans including metrics/analysis for print/email communications, giving by donor segments, etc.; Proactively recommend changes in strategy as necessary;
  • Support the Pasado’s Safe Haven Board of Directors, coaching and supporting individual Board members to help them be effective ambassadors and to take on increasingly active roles in donor engagement and fundraising;
  • Interface with Pasado’s Safe Haven Communications staff to ensure all Development activities are integrated, optimized and well-coordinated;
  • Manage and optimize the performance of a team of four full-time staff: two Major Gifts Officers, Development Data Coordinator and Volunteer Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Outstanding strategic planning, project management and analytical skills demonstrated through a proven track record of success with annual fund and capital campaign goals;
  • Excellent communication skills that translate to strong donor confidence whether in writing, in-person, or over the telephone; ability to be knowledgeable and articulate in stating the organization’s mission and vision, and the case for support of its priorities;
  • Proven manager who can effectively set and manage priorities while supporting team members’ personal growth goals;
  • Ability to appropriately manage highly-confidential information;
  • A disciplined, results-oriented self-starter demonstrating initiative who also knows how to leverage the strengths of a team;
  • Ability to interact with all constituents, including donors, colleagues, Board and volunteers with respect and professionalism;
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Authentic interest in and passion for the mission of Pasado’s Safe Haven

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Minimum 7 years proven fundraising experience relevant to the responsibilities;
  • Ability to work some evening and weekends for development events is required;
  • Experience with fundraising databases; proficiency with Word, Excel is required

Employment Details:

  • Full-time (Exempt) position
  • Remote work with min. 1 day per week in the office at our Sanctuary in Monroe, WA
  • Casual working environment
  • 40 hours per week, flexible schedule
  • Must be fully vaccinated (COVID) within 30 days of start date
