As part of the Enrollment Management division, and reporting to the Assistant Director of Admissions, admissions counselors serve as a key member of the team which is focused on supporting the recruitment goals of the University. Admissions Counselors are part of a professional, fast-paced, and cohesive team where work feels like a second home. This position professionally represents the University and will be responsible to assist with recruitment efforts focusing on the enrollment of undergraduate freshmen and transfer students. Responsibilities include building awareness of the UM-Dearborn brand and conveying the sense of Michigan Excellence and Community upon which we pride ourselves, and promoting the affordability of a UM-Dearborn degree. Recruitment efforts are ongoing and vary throughout the year as focus shifts among the following activities: on and off campus school visits, college fairs and recruitment events (in-person and virtual); assessment of admission applications; the counseling of prospective students through the admissions funnel (from time of application to enrollment); student engagement activities and overall territory management.


  • Manage recruitment territory by assigned academic unit. (65%)
    • Create relationships within and become an expert on university programs and changes within the assigned academic college.
    • Use a territory management model for strategic enrollment management initiatives.
    • Conduct recruitment through virtual methods (presentations and appointments utilizing Zoom and other virtual services) as needed.
    • Counsel potential students (First-Year, Transfer, and Non-Degree) and their families on through the admissions funnel (from applicant to enroll); including, admission requirements, policies and procedures, transfer of credit, scholarships, basic financial aid concepts and other related issues
    • Maintain prospective student records in our customer relationships management software, tracking outreach and following up with students through multiple modes of communication.
    • Connect prospective students and parents with other college resources, including faculty, student life, academic office, and business office.
    • Prepare detailed assessments and reports on recruitment activities and participate in the development of strategic plans for recruitment and yield
    • Partner with the Office of Communication and Events related to events and programs associated with the assigned college.
    • Provide in-depth academic unit specific admissions information in a group setting through Discover Dearborn Sessions.
    • Work collaboratively with financial aid to educate students and families on the value of a University of Michigan-Dearborn education and paying for college.
  • Review undergraduate applications and materials to make decisions using established University criteria (15%)
  • Perform counselor-on-duty responsibilities for appointments and walk-in traffic. (10%)
  • Other (10%):
    • Make formal public presentations and/or serve as an official representative of the University at various recruitment visits and events (in-person and virtual) including on-site admissions and college fairs.
    • Effectively use Salesforce (customer relationship management tool) and Banner (student information system)
    • Assist with general prospective student events and outreach when needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3 years of experience with the field of Admissions
  • Self-motivated and goal-driven
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork experience
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all audiences
  • Enthusiasm for working with people and a sensitivity to working with multicultural populations
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented populations
  • Understanding of the Financial Aid and FAFSA Process
  • Exemplary interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in an educational setting or relevant transferable skills
  • Strong project management skills with ability to effectively prioritize multiple conflicting tasks and follow through on their execution
  • Ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds

Desired Qualifications*

  • College Admissions experience
  • Basic understanding of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Financial Aid
  • Knowledge of Metro-Detroit/Michigan communities
  • Experience in developing and implementing recruitment plans and strategies
  • Experience with Banner and Salesforce.

Additional Information

This position is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Hours/Week: 40 hours/week; Shift/Hours/Days: Varies based on recruitment cycles.
