Assistant Adjunct Professor in Physics

Salary range: Starting at $68,100, commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis)

Anticipated start: July 1, 2022, with the academic year beginning in September 2022.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be made through June 30, 2024 at 100% time, with intended reappointment for a third year, following a successful performance review. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Adjunct Professor. UC Santa Cruz values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to hiring faculty who share these values. Areas of research in the Physics Department include particle physics, astrophysics, biophysics, applied physics and instrumentation, materials science, and condensed matter physics. The selected candidate is expected to establish a vigorous research program in one of these areas within the Physics Department. The position requires the incumbent to contribute to or complement existing faculty research efforts, attract funding, and incorporate students into their research program. The selected candidate will be expected to teach Physics courses (in Mathematical Methods and other subjects across the physics curriculum, as needed), mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and perform departmental committee service.

Candidates with a strong record of publication in any of the aforementioned research areas, a commitment to research and teaching, and/or a record of successful agency funding procurement are strongly encouraged to apply.

Appointments in the Adjunct Professor series are generally supported primarily by non-State funds. This position is fully supported by state funds and contingent upon the Chancellor’s approval of an exception to policy.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Physics, or related fields, at the time of application
  • A minimum of one (1) year of postdoctoral research experience in applied physics, astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, materials science, particle physics, or a related area, at the time of application.
