Job Description

The mission of the Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC) is to welcome community and Notre Dame partners that strengthen the Northeast Neighborhood of South Bend through relationship building and educational opportunities. By promoting innovation and excellence, the Center builds individual capacity and enhances existing systems throughout South Bend. The work of the RCLC addresses five goals to accomplish this mission: Hospitality, Education, Partnership, Civic Engagement, and Sustainability.

This AmeriCorps position will be “housed” at the Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC), and supervised by the RCLC Program Director, but will be responsible for coordinating programs at the Notre Dame Center for Civic Innovation (NDCCI) , located in the West Side neighborhood of South Bend.

The NDCCI Afterschool Program is administered through the RCLC, and shares the mission of improving educational outcomes for low-income, minority youth through the provision of comprehensive programming which includes afterschool tutoring and enrichment activities.

The AmeriCorps member will help coordinate the NDCCI Afterschool Program and develop new and existing youth/literacy/arts enrichment programs and activities at NDCCI, coordinate program evaluation, expand outreach, explore new partnership opportunities, and coordinate short-term projects and events.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
• Coordinate the Afterschool Tutoring and Enrichment program at the NDCCI, which includes individual learning goals for each child, and incorporates focused research-based tutoring strategies aligned with Indiana State Standards. This includes: recruiting, scheduling and supervising volunteers and children, tutoring, supervising student workers, communicating with parents, attending informational meetings, participating in training, maintaining relationships with partners, and using evaluation tools to improve and revise lesson plans and instruction. Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, some of the tutoring may be offered remotely.
• Meet with families and recruit 25 elementary school age participants to enroll in the NDCCI afterschool/arts enrichment program per semester.
• Recruit, train, supervise and coordinate schedules of 20 volunteer tutors per semester. Gather and organize resources for tutors, assist in tutor training, and develop/implement system for monitoring progress.
• Coordinate program evaluation for Tutoring program. This includes: attending and facilitating training in implementation of assessment tools, ensuring that pre-post testing is completed at appropriate times and the results collected, entering data, preparing reports, distributing and collecting evaluation surveys to parents and tutors, and communicating results to RCLC Manager.
• Supervise work study employees to ensure that necessary materials are copied and distributed for each tutoring session.
• Work with the arts coordinator to plan and schedule art enrichment activities, such as field trips, guest artists, and hands-on creative activities.
• Coordinate with partners such as Take Ten, the Snite Museum, and RCLC Shakespeare to provide programming for the arts enrichment portion of the afterschool program.
• Meet regularly with the NDCCI team and maintain ongoing communication about NDCCI youth programming. Work with Literacy Program Director and NDCCI Staff to explore opportunities to collaborate or to further develop existing programming.
• Coordinate the NDCCI Summer Arts camp for middle school students. This includes working with other AmeriCorps members to recruit participants and volunteers and to plan and implement curriculum.
• Document NDCCI Afterschool activities through photographs and text, and submit information regularly to the RCLC web site and Facebook page.
• Oversee special projects as requested, and work with RCLC program staff to coordinate Literacy Program/NDCCI special events.
• Attend weekly RCLC staff meetings and team meetings
• Attend weekly AmeriCorps meetings/trainings at the RCLC.

AmeriCorps is a national service organization aimed at helping communities meet needs in areas, including education, by building capacity of community organizations. AmeriCorps is providing funding for the RCLC to have 12 full-time members during 2022-2023. These are service positions, rather than traditional “jobs.” Full-time AmeriCorps members are expected to complete a full term of service (1700 hours). They will receive a Living Allowance in equal payments throughout the term of service. On completion of service, the member will receive an Education Award.

Full Time AmeriCorps members will be compensated as follows:

  • Monthly Living Allowance: $1,454
  • Education Award: $6,495 (on completion of 1700 service hours)

  • Child Care Assistance (if eligible)

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • US Citizen or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Reliable transportation.

Additional Qualifications include:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in education, working with at-risk youth and community development.
  • Public speaking and the ability to teach/train others.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and some on-line systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work in a variety of settings.
  • Sensitivity, compassion and listening skills required to work with a diverse audience including: RCLC staff, volunteers, fellow AmeriCorps members, Notre Dame and community partners, NDCCI participants (ranging in age from early childhood through senior citizens), neighborhood residents and families of youth participants.

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Spanish-speaking a plus
