Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Director is responsible for advising, program administration and enrollment management services for Education Abroad (EA), to ensure a high-impact student experience throughout the study abroad process supporting a portfolio of 225 programs serving over 1200 students annually. The Assistant Director ensures the timely and efficient delivery of EA advising services, by overseeing all aspects of advising materials and processes, relevant policies and procedures, applicant admissions, enrollment management, pre-departure resources, orientations as well as providing on-site student support.

The Assistant Director plays a key role in the articulation of EA services, programs, and initiatives with the broader OIA goal of universal global learning, in alignment with UMD’s key strategic commitments. This requires a particular emphasis on the generation of resources and advising services, overseeing the engagement of EA advising staff in related efforts. He/she/they will work closely with the Senior Associate Director to incubate new program ideas and coordinate the logistical and administrative details to launch new and diverse programs.

The Assistant Director trains and supervises the EA advising staff team, assesses core advising and program administration processes and handles escalated cases. He/she/they liaise with the campus advising community to inform campus advisors about study abroad issues and to ensure campus advisors have timely, comprehensive responses to requests for information, input, and guidance regarding study abroad. He/she/they also coordinates with EA’s affiliate partners to ensure flow of communication, assess which offerings to be included in the active program directory, and implement any shared initiatives.

The Assistant Director also manages a caseload of advisees, providing expert guidance and outstanding professional service for the selection of academically appropriate overseas programs in the designated region/discipline. This caseload corresponds with program administration responsibilities which include admissions, enrollment, nominations, materials management and collection, delivering pre-departure orientation, visa guidance and on-site support.

The Assistant Director ensures advising, resources and programming align with UMD’s strategic plan and guiding principles, particularly Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and applies those principles to the field of international education and to all aspects of the work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree

Experience
  • 4-6 years experience in international education
  • Experience advising study abroad students
  • Experience with study abroad program administration
  • Experience advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion

Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Knowledge of study abroad programming and practices
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices in academic and study abroad advising
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and cross-cultural skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lead and/or supervise staff
  • Ability to handle multiple/competing priorities and provide excellent outcomes within required time frames

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with Terra Dotta software, Google platform, Microsoft Excel and/or other relevant software platforms
  • Experience at a public higher education institution
  • Participation and leadership in regional, national and international conferences and organizations.

Additional Information:

Salary is in the low $80k’s.
