Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated postdoc with strong quantitative interests and skills for a 12-month project to conduct a population viability analysis for bald eagles in Arizona. The successful candidate will take the lead role in this collaborative project between the U.S. Geological Survey’s Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) and be based within the School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The Arizona breeding population of bald eagles is relatively isolated from other bald eagle populations in North America and a quantitatively robust population model is needed to evaluate the impacts of management scenarios upon population viability. The candidate will use data previously collected by AGFD including band-resight data, nest productivity data, satellite and cellular telemetry data, nest occupancy data, and nest parasite data. We anticipate using these data sources to estimate population demographic parameters and evaluate future population trajectories using an integrated population model. The resulting model will also be used to evaluate the effects of varying productivity on population viability. The successful candidate will also analyze a long-term data set on bald eagle nest parasites to understand how parasite abundance and community composition influences nest productivity. The successful candidate will work closely with the Bald Eagle Program Coordinator for AGFD and take the lead role in preparing scientific papers for publication and agency reports. Products from this position will include 1–3 manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. The position will start July 1, 2022, and is funded for 12 months with the possibility for an additional 6-12 months of support dependent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. Remote telework is possible for this position. Future work may also involve the development of a bald eagle habitat suitability model using telemetry data. Opportunities will be available to present results at regional and national conferences.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Statistics, etc.), strong quantitative skills (particularly with hierarchical models for estimating population demographic parameters), advanced programming skills in R, a demonstrated record of and enthusiasm for publishing scientific research, ability to write high quality manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication in a timely manner, excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to work both independently and collaboratively, an enthusiasm for wildlife conservation, and a strong work ethic. Previous experience with Bayesian integrated population models is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Access databases is also preferred but not required. Previous experience with bald eagles or other raptors is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will also have an enthusiasm for participating in the lab culture and mentoring junior members of the lab (e.g., graduate and undergraduate students). Applicants must apply at: https://arizona.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/4/home/requisition/9930?c=arizona. Please include a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references with the application. Review of applications will begin on June 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
