Operating Title Postdoctoral Research AssociateCampus Location DurhamDepartment UNH Center for Coastal & Ocean MappingSummary of Position We are seeking an outstanding scientist with a doctorate in oceanography with a research focus on measuring and modeling acoustic interactions with the seafloor (scatter, reflection, attenuation, geoacoustic properties, etc.) and related environmental parameters such as seafloor roughness and near bottom hydrodynamics. The position will start as early as Oct 1, 2022.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous research program relevant to the awarded Office of Naval Research funded Task Force Ocean (TFO) project: Measuring and modeling temporal changes in the seafloor scatter and its relationship with environmental variability. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in mentoring students and possibly teaching. For an outstanding candidate, there will be an opportunity to apply for a research faculty position to stay on at UNH through related projects. The successful candidate: 1) Will maintain an independent TFO-specific project centering on measuring and modeling temporal changes in the acoustic scattering from the seafloor and its relationship with environmental variability 2) Must have experience in measuring and modeling: sediment properties acoustically, geoacoustic properties of the seafloor, and modeling the effects of bottom currents on sediment acoustic parameters such as small scale roughness. Proficiency in Matlab (or similar) is desired 3) Is willing to travel to represent the project and present on project progress at national and international meetings 4) Will assist in writing and editing of annual progress reports, conference papers, and journal articles Additional Job Information UNH is a federal contractor within the meaning of the Executive Order on Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors.
