Job Description Summary:
GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. MITM is searching for a full-time Research Assistant for Dr. Lynch’s laboratory. Dr. Lynch’s main interest is to characterize the humoral immune response to viral infections such as HIV and Zika as well as to develop new HIV eradication strategies. This position will aid the current Lynch Lab researchers in planning, executing, and analyzing immunology and virology experiments in the context of HIV-1 and/or emerging viruses. The individual will conduct experiments under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator and will also receive mentoring and direct guidance from the Principal Investigator in order to advance their career in academic research.
Additional duties:
  • Provides assistance to Postdoctoral Scientists and Lynch lab by generating lab reagents.
  • Orders requested reagents and reconciling lab expense reports.
  • Plans and schedules independent experiments consistent with the timeline and objectives of ongoing research projects.
  • Optimizes, develops, qualifies and executes the following assays: ELISA, PCR, molecular cloning and neutralization assays.
  • Provides general maintenance of the laboratory; Maintenance of Good Laboratory Practice, complies with Biosafety guidelines, keeps inspection records and generates SOPs and reports.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots equipment.
  • Participates in group meetings and present data.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This position is essential and on-site at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Enthusiasm for the practice of science.
  • BS in Microbiology or related field and progressively responsible work experience.
  • Ability to follow a set procedure.
  • Ability to work both as a team and independently.
  • Experience in immunology and/or virology based and molecular biology techniques including but not limited to: PCR, ELISA, nucleic acid extractions, sequencing, cell culture and aseptic technique preferred.
  • Knowledge of human work, clinical samples handling, molecular and cell biology techniques.
Typical Hiring Range $18.63 - $24.81
