Job Summary

The Jones lab at UCSF has a Staff Research Associate opportunity. Under direct supervision and training, the Staff Research Associate will be responsible for laboratory research duties as well as some lab organization duties.  This position will involve conducting experiments using Drosophila melanogaster, including maintenance of stocks,  making of fly food, setting up crosses, dissecting/fixing/staining tissue and imaging using immunofluorescence microscopy.

We are looking for a candidate excited about genetic and cell-biological approaches, is eager to learn and comfortable with mechanistic thinking. The candidate will work with a team of scientists to help design, optimize, and perform experiments with Drosophila. General lab organizational tasks, such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position, and other duties as assigned. In addition, independent research projects may become available, once the candidate demonstrates proficiency. The Jones lab is a highly collaborative space that is pushing the cutting edge of stem cell and aging biology.


Department Description

The Anatomy Department is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching. The Department includes 15 faculty members with primary full-time appointments, 15 faculty with joint appointments, and about 150 postdoctoral fellows and students engaged in research that covers questions in cell biology, developmental biology and the neurosciences. Faculty have laboratories at both the Parnassus campus, where there is a focus of interest in cancer biology, and at the Mission Bay campus, where many of the neurobiology faculty are located. The administrative office of the Department is located at the Parnassus campus. Anatomy faculty and staff are committed to building a diverse community that is welcoming and supportive, one that will nurture education and research.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in biological sciences or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with genetic and molecular biology techniques and methods; maintaining Drosophila stocks; setting up genetic crosses; experience with microscopy
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and independently and take initiative in designing experiments and solving problems; communication and organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to multitask effectively; excellent demonstrated record of accomplishment; ability to adhere to all campus safety policies.
  • Knowledge of basic genetics and cell biological processes such as protein trafficking, transcription, translation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Able to perform standard Drosophila husbandry and genetic manipulations.
  • Experience performing cell-biology experiments
