The primary purpose of the Lab Manager is to oversee and maintain undergraduate teaching labs or labs with a similar need for oversight. The Lab Manager is responsible for running the day-to-day operations of their assigned lab/s. May also be responsible for designing a new curriculum, overseeing undergraduate research, and training teaching assistants for courses as indicated.
May provide oversight to Brandeis faculty, staff, and lab members. May provide oversight to members of the broader scientific community,
including other academic institutions and for-profit organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all operational and technical functions of assigned labs. May work within the biology undergraduate teaching laboratories and assist in “non-focus” semester. Alternately, if working within the Electron Microscopy Facility, manages the activities of a multidisciplinary team of scientific investigators involved in research in the field of structural biology. 35%

  • Must be trained in the operation of all teaching lab equipment in order to ensure proper maintenance. In addition, responsible for training all other staff members in the operation of instruments. Attends trainings, workshops, and conferences concerning equipment and subsequent experimental design as needed. Maintains, organizes, and orders all equipment, supplies, and biological strains etc. required for the functioning of the lab. If working within the Electron Microscopy Facility, works with Sr. Research Associates and Post Doctoral Fellows involved in the testing and evaluation of electronic instrumentation, including collaborating with group members in the analysis and interpretation of data. 25%

  • Trains and supervises all lab technicians and undergraduate technical support. Supervises and trains undergraduate research assistants as applicable pending approval from the supervising professor. This may involve supervising undergraduate thesis work in science education, biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience. May coordinate the activities of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students involved in basic laboratory activities such as protein purification, sample preparation, and image processing. 15%

  • Researches, designs, develops, and integrates new laboratories into the curriculum based on the department’s research interests and curricular need. May help with the technical integration of newer labs into the Biol18 curriculum.  This may include determining best setup, preparation, and lab function strategies. Works directly with professor to write new protocols, develop new curricular strategies from the technical stand-point, and ensure all new equipment needs are met. 10%

  • Facilitates and leads graduate and undergraduate TA weekly training sessions in preparation for the lab. 10%

  • The lab manager may TA undergraduate laboratory sections as needed during their assisting semester. Other duties as assigned, may include assuring laboratory compliance with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to laboratory safety, biological hazards, and animal and human subjects. 5%
