University of Michigan’s Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) - housed within the Medical School Office of Research - is seeking a motivated and experienced scientist to lead the Transgenic Animal Model Core (Transgenic Core) as Managing Director.

The incoming Transgenic Core Managing Director will assume direction of a highly experienced team, which serves the needs of University of Michigan’s extensive research community. Having created thousands of mouse and rat models since its inception in 1989, the Transgenic Core is one of the oldest and most productive research cores at the University of Michigan and enjoys a long-standing international reputation of leadership and excellence. The incoming Managing Director, in partnership with the BRCF leadership team, will shape the future of the Core to ensure that it continues to produce transgenic animal models with cutting-edge technology for a diverse and growing group of research scientists and physicians.

What You'll Do


Science & Technology Expertise

  • Keeping up to date on the genome editing and transgenic technologies to identify methods that improve the range and efficiency of transgenic rodent models for the research community
    • Implementing changes in operational protocols and work-flows through consultation with technical staff as needed
    • Evaluating and planning for the future growth and direction of the Core by evaluating and implementing new technologies
  • Collaborating with scientific investigators to determine the best animal model for their research program
  • Advising Core users on how to design projects with genetically engineered mice and rats, and identifying the ideal technology for their application
    • Advising Core users in genotyping of founder animals, trouble-shooting unexpected outcomes, and planning experimental work
  • Working with off-campus project collaborators in the design and validation of customized genome-editing reagents, transgenes, and gene-targeting vectors
  • Leading a hands-on training program in transgenic technology for Core users
  • Serving as a subject matter expert in transgenic rodent models and representing the Core as a scientific ambassador to the transgenic technology research community
  • Presenting the Core’s scientific achievements at local, national, and international meetings

Core Operations Management

  • Developing and implementing the Core’s strategic plan and vision
  • Directing and participating in the day-to-day operations of the Core
  • Optimizing workflows to ensure consistent, reliable, and timely production of genetically engineered rodent models
  • Initiating projects and managing expectations of Core users
  • Tracking project status and recording success rates
  • Supporting Core users with letters of support to granting agencies and preparations of progress reports and manuscripts
  • Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures
  • Keeping track of Core expenditures pertinent to supplies of animals, reagents, equipment, and repairs
  • Working with BRCF leadership and Core scientific advisory committee to enhance service offerings
  • Collaborating with other BRCF cores to further promote team science

Human Resource Management

  • Sourcing, interviewing, and selecting staff
  • Overseeing staff on-boarding and on-going staff training opportunities
  • Planning and directing Core staff schedules
  • Evaluating staff productivity and efficiency
  • Working with the BRCF administration office to identify and provide professional development opportunities for staff
  • Creating/sustaining a diverse and inclusive work environment that is effective for team building and morale

Fiscal Management

  • Managing expenses, and revenues through the use of institutional core management software, as well as preparation of an annual Core report and its presentation to the BRCF leadership team
  • Working with the BRCF administration office to set, monitor, and evaluate recharge rates for the Core and set annual budgets
  • Interfacing with billing and reporting software as well as University of Michigan IT to enhance usability, troubleshoot issues, and ensure timely & accurate billing

Required Qualifications*

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, preferably with a focus on genetics, molecular biology, or transgenic animal technology
  • 3-5 years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience working in transgenic animal model generation with transgenic technology
  • Demonstrated expertise in CRISPR technology and its applications in transgenesis
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing gene targeting projects in mice, rats, and mammalian cells
  • Demonstrated expertise in configuring and implementing genotyping assays
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing highly experienced professional staff members and championing their efforts
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in adapting advanced equipment in transgenesis procedures
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to work in a diverse, customer-based fee-for-service environment

Desired Qualifications*

  • Significant experience in transgenic animal model generation with CRISPR technology
  • 5-10 years of experience in embryonic stem cell technology, random DNA transgenesis, and genotyping assays
  • Experience in designing and implementing genotyping assays for de novo genetically engineered mice and rats
  • Experience with the generation of genetically engineered mice, rodent assisted reproductive technology services (ARTS)
  • Demonstrated expertise in cryopreservation and assisted reproductive technology for rodents
  • Rank of appointment, including at the faculty (research) level, based on qualifications and experience

Background Screening
