The Institute for Social Research (ISR) is the world’s largest academic social science survey and research organization. We are a leader in developing and applying new social science methods, and are committed to educating the next generation of social scientists.  We are seeking engaging and approachable receptionists with excellent customer service skills for our Thompson and Perry Building locations.  In this role, you will greet and direct visitors to our buildings and provide basic administrative and office support to various offices within the institute.

Duties in this role will include:

Reception (70%)

  • Provide excellent customer service as the first point of contact for the Institute for Social Research.  Actively seek ways to assist people. Provide and convey general information about ISR and UM to others effectively and clearly.
  • Act as primary reception, greet and direct staff, visitors and facility workers throughout the building; receive and distribute phone calls from the main Institute line.  Receive packages and notify ISR Mailroom for distribution.
  • Triage questions from visitors to the appropriate office. Typical requests may involve building access, directions to laboratories or events, and inquiries from news agencies.
  • Assist in set up and clean up for events and meetings
  • Maintain safe and clean reception area

General Office Support (30%)

  • Provide professional office/administrative support to a variety of constituents.  This includes but is not limited to Communications, Development, Human Resources and the ISR Directors Office.
  • Duties will include but are not limited to event support, filing, mailings, updating building monitors within established guidelines, and records management
  • Strong attention to detail and high accuracy. 

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED, and a year’s experience performing similar work
  • Possess excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills with all levels of constituents while operating in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently
  • Adhere to a high standard of teamwork by demonstrating adaptability and flexibility.
  • Individual must exhibit a professional and positive image.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Computer skills – proficient with both Microsoft Office products and Google Suite, especially email, shared calendaring and other collaborative applications.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance.

  • Familiarity with University processes and procedures

Work Schedule

Work schedule is typically M - F 8am-4:30pm in the ISR Thompson or Perry locations and may be adjusted by the supervisor.  Remote work is not applicable to this position.
