Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Career Management Specialist for the School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR) – Dean’s Office. This position will primarily support undergraduate, graduate, and alumni from the SMLR programs.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides supplemental organization specific counseling to individuals and groups.
  • Makes presentations to student groups; visit classrooms and events to discuss Career Services offerings.
  • Identifies outside organizations that host interns and/or offer entry-level jobs suitable for HR and Labor & Employment Relations students; identify openings and promote them to students/graduates.
  • Coordinates and makes all necessary arrangements for campus visits/events by organizations (Open Houses, info sessions, panel discussions, etc.).
  • Collaborates with Student Groups (RU SHRM, RU Power, RU LERA) to help manage, market and promote events, services and programs.
  • Collects, organizes, and maintains data for relevant tasks.
  • Creates and manages surveys to capture relevant student offer data.
  • Develops databases to organize organizational contacts.
  • Other tasks relevant to the effective performance on the job.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Masters degree preferably in Counseling, Human Resource Management, or Labor & Employment Relations or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal and effective presentation skills.
  • Experience with career management concepts.
  • Exceptional listening skills.
  • HR/ Labor/Recruiting experience.
  • Experience utilizing the “Handshake” system.
  • Career Counseling experience.
  • Knowledge of the career management process; how to engage in an effective job search campaign.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Career Coaching.
  • Knowledge of HR/Labor recruiting practices in corporate, government, non-profit, union relations, etc.
Equipment Utilized
  • Personal computer with Microsoft Office; Photoshop, and a variety of university databases related to student services.
  • Knowledge of Career Management platforms including Handshake.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Special Conditions
  • Hours are expected to be 9:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday, with hours extended to 8:00PM for special events, scheduled by mutual agreement. Hours are subject to change.
  • Occasional night programs may run until 9:00PM
  • The position will be located at the Janice Levin Building on Livingston Campus, but may require periodic visits to the Labor Ed Center on the Cook/Douglass campus.
