Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Researcher II for the School of Engineering. Reporting to the Pavement Resource Program (PRP) Laboratory Supervisor for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and working independently under minimum supervision with broadly defined objectives, The position requires the working knowledge of hot mix asphalt design and advanced laboratory characterization related to its performance in the field. The position also requires the understanding of pavement construction practices. The position is required to support pavement-related research activities under the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers University.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform professional and research level experiments and research using various asphalt and pavement evaluation-based techniques.
  • Operate and maintain highly specialized equipment, in addition to maintaining and keeping the work place (laboratory) organized, clean, and calibrated.
  • Develop and publish technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as assisting and developing research proposals.
  • Train and lead students and technicians through various established testing procedures and should have some experience doing so.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant research and hot mix asphalt mixture and binder testing experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Both the Level 1 and Level 2 New Jersey Society of Asphalt Technologists (NJSAT) certification in Hot Mix Asphalt Design and Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Technician. The applicant nust have demonstrated a minimum of 2 years conducting advanced laboratory characterization testing using AASHTO and ASTM standard and provisional test procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Excel and Word, is mandatory. A valid driver’s license is also required.
  • Mechanically knowledgeable since many of the testing equipment will need routine maintenance and calibration.
  • Problem solving skills extremely important to assess an issue, diagnose the situation, and perform the proper action/corrective action.
  • Knowledge or experience with AMRL on-site assessments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in a scientific field with emphasis on pavement materials.
  • Certifications in other areas of asphalt materials desirable.
  • Willing to search out and research issues with material performance encountered during laboratory and field testing duties.
  • Experience with servo-hydraulic and servo-pneumatic laboratory required.
  • Experience with authoring or co-authoring technical reports and journal articles.
Equipment Utilized
Equipment:
  • Servo-hydraulic test systems: In particular, the use of the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT), MTS servo-hydraulic test machine, and Overlay Tester, which are test devices that evaluates the permanent deformation, intermediate and low temperature performance of Hot Mix Asphalt materials. The position must know how to calibrate, use the unit for materials testing, and conduct analysis of the resultant data.
  • Servo-pneumatic test systems: In particular, the use of the Flexural Beam Fatigue Device, which is a test that evaluates the fatigue performance of Hot Mix Asphalt. The position must know how to calibrate, use the unit for materials testing, and conduct analysis of the resultant data. The same implies for another piece of laboratory testing equipment called the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer.
  • Gyratory compactors, vibratory compactors, and impact hammer compactors which are commonly used in the asphalt industry for design and preparation of performance testing.

Software:
  • Excel: A thorough knowledge of the use of Excel is mandatory. This software is not only used for design purposes, but is also used for many of the mathematical computations, statistical analysis, and empirical modeling required in the position. Macro development and templates necessary for analysis of test data is required.
  • Word: A thorough knowledge of the use of Word (or any equivalent word processing software) is mandatory. Due to the research nature of the work, any relevant findings from the research will be organized and sent out to peer review publications. Therefore, both report writing and journal publications will be constructed.

Materials: Important
  • Asphalt Materials: Thorough knowledge of the requirements for aggregates (stone and sand), asphalt binder characterization (Superpave and general rheology), and asphalt mixture design and characterization.
  • Soils and Aggregates: This encompasses raw materials in the laboratory, as well as materials being sampled from the field to be analyzed in the lab.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Numerous physical activities, some that require the moving and lifting of heavy materials, so the applicant should be in good physical health
