The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a Research Scientist 2 to perform research on role of certain oncogenes in lung cancer under general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). The position will also involve molecular biology techniques and working with mice.
The Research Scientist 2 will also be responsible for other lab operational responsibilities such as supply ordering, standard UNM lab compliance, and data management. Additional responsibilities include managing scientific projects/experiments. Specifically, it is expected that this position will provide significant intellectual input into the design, execution, and analysis of research projects and scientific outcomes of the projects independently.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
a.M.S. in areas related to Biology or Biochemistry
b.Multi-year lab work experience in cancer biology
c.Experience preparing applications and other documents for submission to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or direct experience in IRB administration
d.Knowledge of in vitro molecular/cell biology protocols and in vivo techniques, eg, handling experimental animal models
e.High scientific integrity
f.Experience performing molecular biology techniques, including, tissue culture, real-time PCR, immunoblot assays, ELISAs, cloning, protein purification and flow cytometry.
g.Experience performing repetitive and technically meticulous small laboratory animal (mice) research work (training will be provided). Preference will be given to individuals with experience in laboratory animal handling.
h.Significant project commitment and abilities to work and think independently as well as contribute to a positive team dynamic
