Posting Summary
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a motivated Academic Support Counselor for the Office of Student Affairs within the School of Public Health.  Under direction of the Assistant Dean Student Services, the Academic Support Counselor is responsible for overseeing the administrative procedures for an assigned caseload of students related to their academic progression in the school. They are also expected to appropriately assess for student needs and refer to support services in a caring, diligent, and professional manner. Works in coordination with multiple departments at the school and maintains communication with university/RBHS student services, the SSS unit, and necessary faculty and staff within the school to ensure all efforts are student-centered. This role will require flexibility with workday schedule and with travel between School locations.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Advises an assigned caseload of MPH, DrPH, and MS students on curricular requirements, while being able to assist students not on caseload as needed.
  • Maintains regular in-person and online office hours for individual and group appointments.
  • Refers students to appropriate support services as needed, such as Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Support Services, and Career Services.
  • Provides support to all degree students, (e.g. MPH, DrPH, etc.) regarding registration, progression towards degree, and any academic issues that arise.
  • Works with department faculty to address student issues, connect students with additional professional advisement, and on advising for exceptions to curriculum plan.
  • Serves as primary contact for students’ academic questions and concerns.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience related to advising, admissions, registration, or student services (along with the Bachelor’s Degree).

  • Valid driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the highest levels of university administration, as well as executives elsewhere in the public health sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be attentive to the needs of the organization and contributions of co-workers, faculty and students.
  • Must appreciate unique characteristics of different cultures and minority groups and respect individual differences.
  • Must be a team-player, innovative and a self-starter with motivation to contribute to the overall goals of the university.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours based on students’ needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Counseling, Social Work, or Student Affairs.
  • Two (2) years of experience related to advising, admissions, registration, or student services (along with the Master’s Degree).
  • Previous experience with advising in a Public Health sector and/or health related program.
  • Familiarity with BANNER and Canvas systems.
