Job Description

This Postdoctoral Research Associate position is located in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Cooper. This training position prepares the individual for a career in academia or industry in bioscience or medicine. Fellows will receive training in writing protocols, manuscripts and grant applications, and in conducting basic research, with an emphasis on increasing independence.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Trains and conducts research studies under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to):

  • Performs laboratory work related to the fellow's main project: Pathophysiology of the NCLs and testing new experimental therapies.
  • Analyzes data, creates and gives presentations, abstracts, posters, manuscripts.
  • Has protected time devoted to development of new projects, training in new methodologies (up to one day per week equivalent).
  • Works in collaborator's laboratories to work on pilot projects for developing own grants/papers (up to one day per week equivalent).
  • Assists with preparation of grant applications as training for taking on an independent role.
  • Supervises and trains staff and students (no more than one day per week maximum).
  • Communicates with research collaborators and others by email, phone or in person.
  • Assists in the design of research experiments.
  • Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Develops proficiency in ancillary skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, critical evaluation of scientific documents, etc.
  • Presents scientific work, both inside and outside the University.
  • Maintains conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Adheres to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. or an equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and record findings.
  • Experience with mouse models, histology and staining, and quantitative microscopy is also strongly preferred.

Salary

Base pay commensurate with experience.
