Description
We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher in soil and plant ecology. Research topics will focus on soil responses to wildfire, post-fire restoration, fuel treatments, wind/water erosion, and/or climate change, primarily in sagebrush steppe within the Intermountain West, USA. The candidate will work in interdisciplinary teams across federal agencies and universities to answer land management research questions. Primary duties include analyzing existing small to large data sets, as well as writing manuscripts, examining the effects of wildfire and land management treatments (e.g. seeding, fuel reduction, compost application) on soil physical and chemical properties. Additionally, opportunities exist to be involved in novel field experiments involving wind and water erosion after wildfire, which may include developing experimental designs and supervising field data collection. The candidate will also be encouraged to participate in national collaborations through the Long-term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network’s soil erosion working groups.
Qualifications
Qualification Requirements: Ph.D. in soil science, biology, ecology, or other natural resource-related disciplines. The position requires advanced statistical skills to evaluate both soil and plant data sets, as well as demonstrated scholarship from first-authored publications and presentations. The candidate should be proficient in soil science, as well as plant-soil ecology. Knowledge about fire ecology, restoration, climate change, desert ecology, as well as geospatial data sets and machine learning, is desired. Application reviews will start on May 16, 2022 until the position is filled. A June start date is preferred but negotiable. Salary is $55,000/yr for up to 2.5 years. To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references to Dr. Beth Newingham at beth.newingham@usda.gov.
