Description of Work
We seek to hire an experienced structural biologist with expertise in CryoEM to manage a new Cryo-Electron Microscopy core facility that will be part of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology (https://biotech.unl.edu/center-biotechnology ). The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) purchased a state-of-the-art Glacios CryoEM that will be installed in a newly remodeled space on campus in late fall of 2022. This is a full-time position and will report to the Director of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology, but the day-to-day operations of the facility will be managed by the candidate. The position will oversee the installation of the microscope, set up fee-for-service rates, develop a strong customer/user base as well as analyze samples. In addition, the candidate will work with others to oversee and maintain the microscope, train new users and assist experienced users. The successful candidate will be responsible for aspects of method development, sample preparation, data acquisition, data analysis using Cryo-EM software platforms, designing and executing protocols and experiments, modifying protocols as needed and could initiate their own research projects. The candidate must have previous cryoEM experience and be excited to interact with students, postdocs, staff and faculty. In addition to UNL users, the user base for this instrument will include external academic scientists and industry customers. Write standard operating procedures, schedule work, analyze data, maintain accurate records, and write reports.
Position duties include:
  • Providing user/customer project support, effectively communicating project progress and providing timely feedback to customers for sample condition and data acquisition strategy advice.
  • Evaluate data quality obtained by users and provide advice on strategies to improve sample preparation and data quality.
  • Interface and collaborate with the Holland High Performance Computing team, who will assist with computational needs for optimal data collection, storage and data processing.
  • Responsible for and coordinate the receiving and shipping of customer samples.
  • Oversee and assist in the training of new laboratory personnel, students, and collaborators.
  • Attending research conferences on a yearly basis to stay current on the latest technologies and new methods in CryoEM.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in an area of biological sciences such as structural biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related field.
  • Experience operating and maintaining a CryoEM instrument including Ph.D/postdoctoral or industrial expertise in CryoEM.
  • Proficient in preparing samples for analysis, handling sample grids, optimization of microscope performance prior to data collection, oversight of data collection and using ancillary cryo-EM related equipment such as Vitrobot, glow discharger, etc.
  • Ability to do downstream analysis and quality control of CryoEM data, including using software for single particle reconstruction in CryoEM.
  • Must be able to work independently, including performing experiments, analyzing and interpreting results, and evaluating microscope performance issues independently and in coordination with vendors.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with a diversity of users, demonstrate attention to detail and keep accurate records about a diverse user base, including accurate logs for microscope performance and usage.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication in English and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work well with others at varying degrees of expertise and seniority and to be customer service-oriented.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in developing and contributing to CryoEM educational and training programs to increase use of facility by new users.
  • Ability to assist with drafting publications, contributing to grants, and reports.
