Position Summary
The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, in collaboration with Organization, Information, & Learning Sciences at the University of New Mexico, invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholar to work with the FRAME Project (http://www.vanessasvihla.org), supported by the National Science Foundation CAREER program. The initial 12-month appointment is for 2022-2023, renewable for up to six months. The FRAME project introduced the construct, framing agency, defined as making decisions that are consequential to how design problems are framed, and therefore, consequential to learning and designing. To date, we have developed a linguistic toolkit for characterizing framing agency in talk, as well as a survey for measuring framing agency. We have developed and tested a constellation of tools for supporting framing agency, including the Wrong Theory Protocol (WTP). Ongoing studies leverage these developments to build theory about how framing agency develops, its role in innovative design and professional identify formation, and how it is entangled with structural, cultural, and disciplinary power relations. Role & Responsibilities: The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate closely with the PI to direct the research project. In particular, the scholar will: · contribute to one or more ongoing research studies that investigate how framing agency develops, how it relates to innovative design and professional identify formation, or how it is entangled with power; these studies span multiple methods. The scholar will contribute to specific studies based on their existing methodological expertise in either (a) discourse analysis or (b) confirmatory factor analysis/SEM. · attend lab/project meetings · attend and present at relevant conferences, including participating in early career workshops · collaborate on manuscripts, proceedings and annual reports related to FRAME, and also related to their own research program. Professional development: The postdoctoral scholar will have opportunities to learn about grant preparation and project management. We have set aside time for the post-doc to develop and execute their own independent research program. Twice per year, the postdoc will submit/update their professional development plan, outlining professional goals and requisite experiences. The postdoc will have opportunities to co-teach and guest lecture in courses in Chemical Engineering and/or Organization, Information & Learning Sciences, as applicable. The postdoctoral scholar will report to FRAME PI Vanessa Svihla.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in the learning sciences, engineering education research, or a closely related field by the date of appointment
Experience with a focal educational research method relevant to the project is required. Only those ready to direct analysis using at least one of the focal methods should apply:
discourse analysis of in situ, conversational data
confirmatory factor analysis or structural equation modeling
Preferred qualifications:
The ideal candidate will: · be knowledgeable about and experienced with research on design problems, methods/practices, and learning—especially in the context of engineering design · have experience with project and data management · be interested in mentoring and learning with collaborators, including graduate students · be comfortable working with low-cost or open software to support qualitative analysis (e.g., incorporating Excel formulas or R packages) or quantitative analysis (e.g., R packages like lavaan or others as appropriate for SEM and CFA) · have demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities, and especially by applying a critical epistemology within the research process
