Position Summary

Come join the Brown Lab (Medicine/Gastroenterology). Our goal is to understand how glycosylation epitopes contribute to the development esophageal, gastric, and pancreatic cancer.

We address these questions through a wide variety of techniques ranging from in vitro protein chemistry -to- cell and organoid culture -to- mouse models and we have several ongoing translational projects assaying for biomarkers discovered through our basic science efforts.

The Lab: We are a team-oriented, basic-translational lab researching mechanisms and pathways of tissue transformation into metaplasia and cancer with specific but not exclusive interest in glycosylation of the GI foregut. Ultimately, our goal is to leverage this understanding to identify novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these devastating diseases.

The Scientific Environment: The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with welcoming collaborators across the GI division, the School of Medicine and across the US to develop this project and their own independent project. The GI division has an NIDDK funded Digestive Diseases Research Center (https://ddrcc.wustl.edu/ ) with numerous resources for investigation and funding. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of Jeff Brown / Faculty Mentor, including (but not limited to):

  • Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
  • Develops expertise in the cellular processes required for metaplastic and oncogenic transformation.
  • Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
  • Presents scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Designs research experiments, evaluates findings, and reports results in high quality research papers.
  • Maintains conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities and conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent).
  • Experience with techniques in molecular and cellular biology, as well as basic cell culture.
  • Comfortable with the concept of using vertebrate animal models and is willing to learn mouse models of GI disease.
  • Background in gastrointestinal research and/or a closely related field in epithelial/mucosal disease.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the work described and wear protective equipment when necessary.
  • Outstanding documentation and organized record-keeping skills.
  • Experienced with and motivated to improve in experimental troubleshooting, as well as critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals (if the worker chooses to work with mice).

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.

$53,760.00 - $53,760.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
