Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit |
The UNCG Department of Biology endeavors toward excellence in conducting research and teaching biological concepts and skills to biology majors and graduate students, to prepare them for professional careers and more advanced study. We introduce non-biology majors to the foundations and applications of biology. By involving undergraduate and graduate students in research, we contribute to an increase society’s knowledge across the broad spectrum of biology. We train doctoral students in Environmental Health Science, a complex and rapidly changing discipline. Through laboratory training and directed research experiences, we enhance our students’ technical and analytical skills so that they can contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technological world. Our leadership in scientific innovation and discovery serves our students, profession, and our local and global communities.

Position Summary |
The Biology Department has a mission to generate new knowledge through research that impacts sub‐disciplines of biology. The position is dedicated to conducting research on how mercury biogeochemistry responds to different silvicultural practices aimed at restoring Longleaf Pine ecosystems. This is a100% grant-funded position for at least 6 months. There are three grants: one from NSF; one from USDA; and one from the US Dept. of Energy. All three grants are connected in examining the biogeochemistry of mercury, and its relation to environmental factors and other variables (e.g., soil organic matter) as related to silvicultural techniques to restore Longleaf Pine ecosystems. The successful candidate will work independently and will be a part of the leadership team with faculty from the US Forest Service, Clemson University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The successful candidate will oversee the collection, processing, and analyzing soil, water, and insect samples for total and methyl mercury. The candidate will also analyze the data collected and draft papers and presentations to be shared at national and/or international meetings where work on biogeochemistry of mercury in forest ecosystems or changes in biogeochemistry due to different silvicultural practices are relevant. The candidate will supervise at least one undergraduate student and also be in charge of the laboratory including lab safety and will also have responsibility to ensure that the necessary laboratory supplies and chemicals are available in the lab and disposed of properly. The candidate may also need to make a few overnight trips to the Santee Experimental Forest to collect samples, assist with sensor placement or collection of data, and interact with team members. This position is absolutely critical for UNCG to meet the expectations and deliverables of the granting agencies.
