Job Description

Position Summary

Postdoctoral Research (Scholar or Associate) Position Open in the Setton Lab (Department of Biomedical Engineering, Danforth Campus). Area of expertise: Electrophysiology, cell biology, cell culture, musculoskeletal pathology. A postdoctoral position is available immediately for applicants interested in advancing research in nerve-tissue cross-talk in application to arthritis and intervertebral disc degeneration.

The goals of this project are to understand neuronal remodeling in response to degenerative musculoskeletal diseases. Project work will involve tissue characterization, including measurement of nerve activation and generalized neuronal responses. The individual will have the opportunity to design their own project and work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, biologists, materials scientists, and clinicians.

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with collaborators in Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Career Center, Teaching Center, and campus groups.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of Professors: Setton, Tang and Culver including (but not limited to):

  • Manages their own project, which is expected to yield one or more publications including conference abstract proceedings.
  • Develops expertise in electric field stimulation or chemical stimulation of neuronal cells in vitro.
  • Supports or leads in vivo measures of musculoskeletal degeneration including animal work, surgery, and/or breeding.
  • Utilizes or learns methods to support evaluations including microscopy, immunostaining, biochemical assays, and live cell imaging.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in any engineering discipline or related physical science field.
  • Prior experience with biomedical sciences.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work with a multidisciplinary research team.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, independent, and possess training in areas of electrophysiology, cell biology, cell culture, or musculoskeletal pathology.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.  The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
