Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity is available to join a progressive Agriculture Department in northwest Kansas at Colby Community College as a full-time Beef Program Director/Instructor. The faculty member will actively engage in education to complement the current degree programs in the agriculture department. Duties include:

  • Develop, teach and assess courses that directly relate to beef cattle production and farm/ranch management in face-to-face and online modalities.
  • Manage, market, and continue to improve the College cow herd through selection, genetic evaluation, and reproductive technologies.
  • Solicit participation in, and coordinate the bull test through GrowSafe® technologies, as well as managing the annual spring bull sale.
  • Identify resource needs and opportunities with other faculty to help guide program outcomes, structure, and development.
  • Encourage and maintain beef cattle partnerships that support the Agriculture Division.
  • Participate in Agriculture Division functions and activities that promote not only the Agriculture Division, but also Colby Community College.
  • Advise and mentor students to meet the demands of an ever-changing agriculture and beef industry and equip current and future students to meet those demands.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to teach Beef Management and Farm and Ranch Management courses in face-to-face, online, and hybrid learning modalities.
  • Awareness of beef cattle production and their roles within the US and internationally.
  • Familiarity with seed stock and commercial cattle production.
  • Knowledge of bull sale preparation and management.
  • Courses required for teaching and/or development (not limited to): Beef Cattle Science, Applied Beef Practices, Market Beef Production, Farm and Ranch Management Tech I and II, Beef Management Tech I and II, Ag Equipment Safety, Artificial Insemination, and Ag Orientation. Other courses may be taught to complement other Agriculture degree and certificate programs.
  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of students with varying learning styles.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Manage and supervise interns and Work Study students.
  • Ability to work in a team with shared responsibilities and agreed-upon objectives.
  • Commitment to the community college mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MONTHS WORKED ANNUALLY

  • Full-time, nine months
  • Supplemental contract included for cow herd management

TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE

  • TBD; per class schedule
  • Nights and weekends as beef cattle production determine

JOB DUTIES/TIME PERCENTAGES

40% – Develop and facilitate learning in courses that directly relate to Beef Production and Farm and Ranch Management.
40% – Manage and maintain the College beef cattle herd and annual bull sale.
5% – Student advising and engagement activities.
5% – College Service (including but not limited to committee work, shared governance, and contributing to the institution).
5% – Professional Development.
5% – Curriculum review and development, and the assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institutional level.

SALARY

$39,000-$49,000, depending on experience and credentials.

Flexible benefits program, which includes options for single and family health and dental coverage, life insurance, reimbursement accounts, sick leave, vacation leave, and 21 days of holiday day. Participation in the state retirement program is required.

Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree in Beef Production, Farm and Ranch Management, Animal Science, or related field.

Preferred: Master's degree or higher in an academic discipline that focuses on Beef Production, Farm and Ranch Management, Animal Science, or related field, or a master's degree that includes 18 earned graduate-level credit hours focused on Beef Production, Farm and Ranch Management, or Animal Science.
