The Division of Medical Genetics has an exciting job opportunity for a Research Scientist 2 with an interest in developmental and degenerative neurogenetics. We study both single gene and complex disorders. The work involves discovery of disease-causing genes/variants, and functional analyses in various biological models, including cell lines, transgenic mice, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPCS).

The applicant should be a motivated, highly organized individual interested in learning/applying novel skills and techniques in this fast-moving field. The Research Scientist 2 is expected to work independently and collaboratively with a highly interactive group including the PI, faculty colleagues, research personnel and postdoctoral fellows.

• Manage the mouse colony, including ordering and establishing mouse lines, process mouse tails for DNA, PCR-based genotyping, process mouse tissues for other analyses, and maintain the mouse-model related databases - 40%
• Process human blood samples, maintain the human sample log and database, separate blood cell fractions, extract DNA and RNA and establish and maintain EBV transformed lymphocyte lines - 15%
• Cell culture, growth analyses, flow cytometry, and related assays - 10%
• Perform mouse neurobehavioral tests - 10%
• Administrative activities: ordering supplies, lab housekeeping, renewing permits - 10%
• Present ongoing work and findings at lab meetings - 5%
• Participate in preparation of manuscripts for publication - 5%
• Troubleshoot experimental problems - 5%

• Bachelor’s degree in biological science or related field. At least 2 years of relevant experience.

Additional requirements:
• Experience with basic lab procedures like DNA and RNA extraction from blood and tissues, PCR-based and next-generation sequence analysis and real-time PCR, DNA cloning and mutagenesis, cell culture, transfection and gene expression analysis, and western blot analyses.
• Expertise in genetics, molecular and cell biology, and mouse models.
• Experience working with mouse colonies.
• Experience with perfusion, stereotaxic surgery in mice, brain slice culture, CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis, iPSC, transcript profiling and proteomics, and confocal microscopy.
• Experience with light and fluorescence microscopy, mouse models, and tissue fixation, sectioning, and immunostaining.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

• Establishing and/or differentiation of human iPSCs.
• Experience with transcriptomics and proteomics.
• Advanced degree in a related field.

• This position requires some flexibility of work schedule to accommodate experiments with fixed-time courses.
