We are looking for an internationally recognised researcher who has demonstrated the ability for creative research in modern chemistry and to work across discipline boundaries.
With a forward-looking research programme within the field of physical chemistry, the role holder will be able to cultivate an internationally prominent research area within the department. We encourage computational chemists with special interest on biomolecules and interfaces for energy applications to apply. The post holder will work with colleagues at King’s and beyond (e.g. at our partner organisation the Francis Crick Institute, other institutions and in industry) exploiting chemistry imaginatively to address societal challenges and leading exciting, collaborative research programmes.
The role holder will help in the development and implementation of departmental strategy, providing leadership, fostering talents of staff and students and a friendly, supportive departmental culture which values collegiality and good citizenship. They will mentor and inspire early career staff and nurture skills and ambitions of their research group.
A key aspect of the role will be to guide a revamp of our chemistry curriculum to ensure that physical chemistry is embedded across the whole course in an integrated manner. It would be advantageous if the appointee is able to teach physical chemistry at all levels and will enthuse students and staff with a modern approach that goes beyond the confines of the traditional subdiscipline.
All academic staff are expected to have/obtain a professional qualification for university teaching, promote a collegiate approach, be responsible for health and safety in own area and undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.
About the Department of Chemistry
King’s vision is to firmly establish a contemporary department, which realises the transformative power of Chemistry in interdisciplinary research.
We believe that realising the profound impact chemical sciences has across discipline interfaces is central to the scientific advances that are needed to solve some of the most pressing problems of the 21st century in medicine, energy, and the environment. This can be achieved by exploring innovations in Chemical Biology, Biomaterials Science, Bioelectricity, Synthetic Biology and Nanomedicine and key partnerships with industry and the Francis Crick Institute where a number of our academics have satellite laboratories and joint appointments.
Current research in the department fuses chemistry, physics and biology with a commonality of employing chemical principles to address the molecular mechanisms of biological processes. We believe this new biological focus for chemistry will drive the engineering of molecules, materials, and measurement tools to help understand health and treat disease.
We have modern undergraduate courses and offer both three year BSc and four year MSci programmes**. **As well as Chemistry, we also have flagship Chemistry with Biomedicine degree course. The final year of our four-year courses focusses on an exciting research project based in Chemistry research labs or interdisciplinary projects hosted by groups researching related areas at King’s. There is the opportunity to undertake a Year’s Professional Placement on all undergraduate courses.
We are looking forward to welcoming our first cohort on our Interdisciplinary Chemistry Research MRES programme in September 2022. Students will enjoy the opportunity of working with two supervisors from across Kings and the Francis Crick Institute.
