We are seeking motivated, bright scientists to join our antibiotics drug discovery and development team in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University (Andrew G. Myers Research Group).
Key Responsibilities: Evaluate the antibacterial spectra and potencies of novel antibiotic candidates by the determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs); evaluate the efficacy of antibiotic candidates in vivo though murine infection models; support team scientists in designing and executing key experiments to characterize the activity profiles of lead candidates in detail (e.g., bacterial ribosome inhibition assays, resistance mechanism elucidation).
Applications accepted until position filled
Basic Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. is required. PhD in microbiology is preferred. Applicants trained in a related biological science (molecular biology, cell biology, or chemical biology) will also be considered.
  • Meaningful hands-on laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological principles.
  • Capability to work safely with pathogenic strains of bacteria, employing practices and procedures suitable for biosafety level 2+ (BSL-2+).
  • Ability to think critically and communicate effectively, design and execute experiments independently, and learn new techniques quickly.
  • Effective writing skills for maintaining a detailed laboratory notebook and for providing periodic research reports.
Additional Qualifications
Competitive candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Bacterial cell culture, including the culture of pathogenic (BSL-2+) and anaerobic strains.
  • Determination of antimicrobial MICs.
  • ¬∑Antibacterial profiling, including time-kill studies, post antibiotic effect (PAE) studies, resistance frequency studies and cell-free translation inhibition assays.
  • In vitro safety profiling, including mitochondrial toxicity, cytotoxicity, and hemolysis assays.

Special Instructions
Please include the following items as part of your application:
  • A cover letter including a summary of your research experience, your research interests, and your interest in this particular role.
