Academic Advisor (Part-Time)

Full Job Description

The Academic Advisor is a part-time, staff position located on both the OCH and LLP Campuses in Monroe, NC and Polkton, NC. Under the direction of the Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor works within the College’s advising centers to assists all student populations with program exploration and selection, guides students on course selection, monitors progress towards the fulfillment of academic goals and requirements, creates individualized student graduation plans, and assists students with registering for classes.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Work variable schedule as needed, approximately 15-20 hours per week on both the OCH and LLP campuses in Monroe, NC and Polkton, NC.
  • Support, guide, and proactively advise students interested in our health programs to include, but not limited to, Nursing, Medical Sonography, and Medical Assisting.
  • Be knowledgeable in all health program admission guidelines to assist students in creating academic plans.
  • Monitor data and alerts from student retention software to provide proactive student support; identify behaviors that may indicate barriers to academic success; and implement intervention strategies to improve academic standing and successful completion of program.
  • Assist in the development and execution of communication, corresponding, and tracking of prospective students from interest to registration.
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong understanding of cultural competency, and how to communicate effectively to different audiences, with the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments.
  • Advise and register all first-time and returning students, both walk-in and by appointment.
  • Provide academic advising to distance learners via phone and online.
  • Interpret testing results relevant to placement decisions.
  • Provide academic advising front desk support as needed.
  • Make appropriate referrals to campus resources for students perceived as at-risk.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic advising experience
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working with student information systems (SIS), such as Datatel/Colleague or Banner
