The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes. The Department of Biochemistry – Institute for Protein Design has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/ Engineer – Assistant .

In this role, the Research Scientist/ Engineer – Assistant (Assistant Laboratory Manager), ~90% of the effort will be in lab management activities detailed below. Part of their lab management duties are supervising undergraduates who perform lab support tasks - this includes stocking, buffer preparation, general lab cleanliness, etc. With 3 students I would anticipate that time spent supervising directly would be 10% of this role. Research Scientist/ Engineer – Assistants are also responsible for hiring, training and conducting reviews for undergraduates. The remaining ~10% of effort will be dedicated to preparing reports on lab activity for IPD management.


• Main duties will include those described above, which will be carried out during normal working hours, periodically requiring overtime work to achieve key goals for the lab.
• The Assistant Laboratory Manager will be responsible for ensuring proper reagent stocks, and for anticipating & avoiding supply shortcomings.  = 10%
• Ensuring that cold storage & common-use spaces are organized & maintained, while working with other laboratory stakeholders to ensure good laboratory citizenship. = 20%
• This role includes production/maintenance of lab stock materials (working with undergraduates and other lab members) that are not purchased as-is from vendors. = 10%
• This role includes direct responsibility for large equipment maintenance management (e.g. service contracts) and distributed collaborative support among other stakeholders in the lab. = 10%
• Familiarity with office productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to prepare research reports on the work performed. = 10%
• The Assistant Lab Manager must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance and familiar with BSL1 and BSL2 requirements. = 10%
• Will work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff in support of research involving protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization.= 10%
• This role will involve management of daily activities of ~3 undergraduate support staff. = 10%
• This role will mainly be located at HSB and Ben Hall Locations.


• Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry or related field + less than 3 months of experience in related field.
• Previous lab experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


• Mechanically inclined and willing to learn about large instrument function and maintenance.
• Previous experience leading teams or management experience.
