Job Description

The Immunomodulation and Translational Research Program in the Department of Child Health, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to participate in federally-funded several projects developing immunomodulatory approaches with applications to autoimmunity (with a focus on type 1 diabetes) and transplantation (pancreatic islets, stem cell-derived beta cells, hematopoietic stem cells, solid organs). The program focuses on developing novel biologics and delivery platforms for immunomodulation to treat autoimmunity and graft rejection (Immunity 2002; Nature Materials 2018; Biomaterials 2019; Science Advances 2020, Journal of Immunology 2020; American Journal of Transplantation 2020). 
Duties for this Position include:

  • Use various platforms for targeted delivery of novel biologics for localized immunomodulation to prevent and treat type 1 diabetes.
  • Engineer hematopoietic stem cells or mesenchymal stem cells with select biologics for immunomodulation with a focus on autoimmunity and tolerance to tissue and solid organ allografts.
  • Design and use bacterial vectors for targeted delivery and expression of novel biologics for immunomodulation to prevent autoimmunity and transplant rejection.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute experiments, data collection, analysis, interpretation.
  • Preparation of the data for grant submission, publication, and presentation at local, national, and international meetings.
  • Help in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
  • Perform other assigned duties on a needed basis


Minimum: Ph.D., M.D. or D.V.M. degree with a minimum of 3 years of basic laboratory experience, solid understanding of basic immunology and hands-on expertise in immune cell function analysis, handling mice and performing various manipulations (bleeding and injections via different routes), and end-point tissue harvesting.
Candidate will be evaluated on: 
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in tissue culture, humanized mouse models, NOD model of autoimmunity, multiparameter flow cytometry, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and immune cell function and proliferation assays. Effective oral and written and interpersonal communications skills as well as proficiency in word, excel, power point, and statistical software’s.  Experience in bioinformatics will be an added advantage.
