Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Instructional Designer is responsible for supporting faculty in the development and revision of course materials for courses. Specific duties include: using web-based course management software in the curriculum design process; assisting in producing learning materials in a variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, video, animation, and multimedia; assisting in designing, developing, and delivering workshops and online training to faculty and staff in the use of instructional technologies in distance education; assisting faculty and subject matter experts in designing innovative teaching materials for a self-directed, flipped classroom approach; developing training materials and assisting faculty to ensure all content is ADA (American Disability Act) compliant. This position receives general direction from the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and exercises no supervision.

NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Knowledge of: 1. D2L Brightspace or other web-based course management systems. 2. Best practices in electronic learning environments. 3. Trends in teaching/learning theories, computer-based instruction, and distance learning. 4. Methods and software to capture and edit multimedia content for online courses, such as Snagit, Camtasia, and Zoom. Skills in: 5. Visual design. 6. Customer service orientation. 7. Listening effectively. 8. Synthesizing information. 9. Making constructive suggestions based on oral input. 10. Problem solving and decision-making. Ability to: 11. Manage multiple projects concurrently. 12. Guide the curriculum design and provide strategies for adapting/converting courses to web-based delivery. 13. Assist in designing, developing, and delivering workshops and online training to faculty and staff in the use of technologies in multiple modes of delivery. 14. Perform responsibilities in an independent, timely, and effective manner, requiring minimum of direct supervision. 15. Compliance with copyright and ADA guidelines. 16. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 17. Maintain professional collaborative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Sedentary-Desk work; occasional field trips e.g. for college or program activities. Minimal Hazard/Exposure-Standard office setting. At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Instructional/Educational Technology or Curriculum.

Experience: More than one year of professional work experience in Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Instructional/Educational Technology or Curriculum Design, with an emphasis in online course development or certification.

Experience: One year of relevant experience in developing courses for online presentation with a proficiency in the use of PC computers, and editing digital video and audio for streaming.
