Description

The Fish and Movement Ecology Lab led by Nathan B. Furey at the University of New Hampshire is seeking a postdoctoral researcher (for 2 years) to investigate the movement ecology and phenology of a variety of fishes in estuarine and coastal habitats. The postdoctoral researcher’s efforts will include a collaboration with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (Dr. Matthew Ogburn) on the movements and phenology of fishes in the Chesapeake Bay, funded by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The researcher will have access to telemetry data on a variety of Chesapeake Bay fishes collected by SERC, including cownose rays, blue catfish, striped bass, and river herring to build habitat distribution models and assess phenology. In addition, the researcher will lead further research in movement or trophic ecology relevant to the Fish and Movement Ecology Lab. The lab is currently conducting research on a variety of freshwater, estuarine, and marine systems across North America on several fishes, including migratory. The scholar would work with Furey to determine an appropriate project given the scholar’s interest and expertise. We will consider a remote appointment for the right candidate, but over a shorter period (1 year) UNH is a federal contractor within the meaning of the Executive Order on Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors. This position may require that you be vaccinated against COVID-19 in the future, unless you apply for and receive a religious or medical exemption.

Qualifications

We are seeking a PhD with expertise in ecology, fisheries science, biology, or related field. Applicants should demonstrate strong programming (R or similar), statistical (including species distribution models or similar), and visualization skills. We also prefer the researcher have experience in conducting telemetry research (PIT or acoustic), including field work. In addition, the researcher should have a strong record of publishing in peer reviewed journals and communicating their research via presentations and other means. We hope the researcher will be excited to work closely with graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Fish and Movement Ecology Lab and participate in the Smithsonian-led Movement of Life Initiative (https://movementoflife.si.edu).
