Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist II (Per Diem) in FEMA Crisis Counseling Program for Healthcare Workers (Call Center) for Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. Performs functions in support of the Unit’s mission providing person centered, culturally competent, and “consumer friendly” services to individuals who contact the Call Center. Receives requests for service, undertakes review of the service need of the caller or consumer, and responds by offering support and appropriate referrals and disposition. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- As part of the Call Center team, interacts with the supervisor regarding duties and assignments for each shift.
- Provides “customer friendly” services, taking initiative in engaging individuals served in an empathic and concerned manner.
- Assists the individual served to effectively address the problem, and/or refers the individuals served to the appropriate clinical staff.
- Provides services consistent with philosophy of UBHC.
- Reviews service requests/referrals for all populations, and responds in accordance with prescribed departmental procedures.
- Demonstrates the ability to identify contacts that need a higher level of intervention, and follow departmental protocol for handling and triaging crisis or high risk calls.
- Identifies the appropriate disposition using the information gathered in the departmental database and departmental criteria. d. Involves consumer in developing a plan for disposition.
- Documents contacts, interventions, and interactions with callers in a timely manner and in accordance with established policies.
- Maintains comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of eligibility and admission criteria for units, programs and contracts.
- Maintains cordial and cooperative work relationships with all unit staff, and contributes positively to unit cohesiveness and morale.

Minimum Education and Experience |
- Four (4) years of full-time experience in the mental health field or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant mental or social health care field.
- Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree.

- Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous training and/or experience working with substance use disorders.
- Fluency in Spanish.
