Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
Duke University’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn) is at the forefront of women’s reproductive healthcare, education and research. The Department consists of 90 MD and PhD faculty, 13 consulting and adjunct faculty, 32 advanced practice providers, 34 Ob-Gyn residents and 15 sub-specialty fellows. The Department has a robust research program with basic, translational (T1 and T2), and clinical investigators supported by over $11 million in research funding, including $5 million from NIH(grants and contracts) and $3.4 million from non-NIH federal sponsors (PCORI, CDC, AHRQ, EPA) in 2020. This includes participation in multiple NIH-funded clinical trials and research networks, three NIH K12 Clinical Scientist Institutional Career Development Awards (BIRWCH, WRHR, KURe) and laboratories focusing on gynecologic malignancies, perinatology, epigenetics, early human development, and environmental impacts on reproductive health, and a burgeoning data science program.
Position Summary: The Department of Ob-Gyn seeks a candidate with a doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, or a related quantitative field. Our group uses epidemiologic methods and modeling to explore and improve disparities in healthcare delivery and outcomes. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of natural history modeling and a demonstrated interest in women’s health and healthcare or social determinants of racial/ethnic inequalities in health.
The candidate will have the unique opportunity to have dual mentorship from an interdisciplinary team at Duke University. About half of the post-doc’s time will be spent working with Drs. Laura Havrilesky, Evan Myers, and Marc Ryser on a newly funded U01 Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET) project whose aims are to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in uterine cancer prevention, detection and treatment (https://cisnet.cancer.gov/uterine/ )
The other half of the post-doctoral candidate’s time will be working with Dr. Whitney Robinson developing new research at the intersection of midlife gynecologic care and early cancer detection.
For the CISNET project, the selected candidate will perform mathematical modeling of reproductive factors and the natural history of uterine cancer, as part of the NCI-funded U01 grant. Specifically, they will be responsible for obtaining model inputs from population-level surveys and databases, developing, maintaining and running mathematical models, and conducting a wide array of microsimulation experiments in support of the grant’s aims. They will prepare scientific manuscripts describing and implementing the proposed approach in applied settings, and present findings at conferences. The postdoctoral research associate will prepare material for discussion at weekly team meetings and participate in the CISNET modeling community as a junior investigator at national meetings.
Dr. Robinson’s research group uses a reproductive justice and public health critical race praxis framework to investigate racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic inequities in gynecologic health and health care, e.g., fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis, using data derived from free text in electronic health records, medical coding, and other administrative databases. For Dr. Robinson’s projects, the candidate will likely work on proposal and manuscript development related to routine gynecologic care as an opportunity to enhance early detection of gynecologic cancers. There are also opportunities to use data from an EHR-derived study of >2,000 hysterectomies conducted among premenopausal patients in the South in the mid-2010s and to collaborate on projects using ongoing cohort of dementia development among adults across the lifespan, among other ongoing work. Day-to-day work will involve background research for grant-writing as well as statistical analysis and manuscript writing as a co-author.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Completion of a PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, or a related quantitative field is preferred.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: CISNET project: Mastery of Julia, C++, R, or Python. R or SAS are preferred for Dr. Robinson’s projects.
The successful applicant demonstrates great attention to detail, works independently, takes initiative, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and performs well in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface between the quantitative sciences and medicine. The successful candidate is expected to have a track record of first-author publication in peer-reviewed journals.
