Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, the Dean is a member of the university leadership team and oversees all functions within the Quinlan School of Business. The Dean is responsible for providing overall vision and leadership for faculty, staff, administration, and students. The Dean also ensures the quality of academic programs and the student experience, and that the School retains its AACSB accreditation. Externally, the Dean represents the Quinlan School to alumni, the Chicago business community, and other key stakeholders. The Dean plays a critical role in establishing new – and strengthening existing – relationships across all constituencies, both internal and external.

The Dean will work within the School and the broader university to provide academic vision and functional leadership to fulfill the goals of the School and contribute to the mission of Loyola University Chicago. Overseeing a budget of approximately $23.5 million, the Dean is supported by a group of associate deans, assistant deans, chairs, directors, as well as other key administrators who assist with the effective operations of the School. The Dean’s Board of Advisors comprises a group of global business leaders offering valuable direction, advice, and expertise to the Quinlan School.

Execute an ambitious vision for the Quinlan School of Business

The Dean joins Quinlan at an exciting but pivotal moment as the School seeks to strengthen its reputation as a front-runner in developing ethical business leaders at the intersection of business and social change. In strong collaboration with the board of advisors, faculty, staff, students, and other key stakeholders, the Dean will hone the School’s distinctive identity, and execute a unifying vision and strategy to amplify it. In doing so, the Dean will develop policies, programs, and procedures as well as build the necessary infrastructure and resources to innovatively operationalize the School’s strategic plan, while leading by example with the values integral to Quinlan’s brand. The Dean will evaluate and improve Quinlan’s internal structure and, by effectively utilizing its strong human and financial resources, invest in the long-term growth and success of the School.

The Dean must also bring an understanding of dynamic changes in the higher education landscape as a result of a post-COVID world, student demographics, and the professional workforce market in order to create a distinctive pathway forward that addresses evolving student and community needs. The Dean will be visible, approachable, and transparent in this work, energizing constituents and building trust around efforts to drive relevance and technological innovation. The Dean will also continue to uphold high standards for teaching and research with an ecumenical balance, helping faculty maximize their potential in both, while supporting efforts that serve Loyola’s mission and commitment to social justice.

Be a visible, engaged, and successful fundraiser in support of the School’s vision

Loyola University Chicago is in the early planning phase of a comprehensive fundraising campaign, and the Dean will work closely with the advancement office as a champion on behalf of the School and the university. The Dean will help identify and cultivate donor relationships, especially with alumni, the board of advisors, and the Chicago business community. The Dean will be a committed fundraiser, engaging and soliciting significant support from individuals and corporations. Thus, the Dean will strengthen Quinlan’s financial position and will fund strategic priorities, including faculty research, student scholarships, and curricular and program development. The Dean must have the energy, enthusiasm, interpersonal skills, and passion to effectively communicate the Quinlan story in a way that inspires donors and the alumni community.

Innovatively grow the School’s graduate offerings and bolster the Quinlan brand

The Dean will think expansively about the School’s portfolio and ways to expand that align with Loyola’s Jesuit, Catholic mission, particularly those which contribute to social impact, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and ethical business development. Quinlan alumni are highly regarded and sought after, and there is great potential to elevate the prestige and respect for the School’s reputation and increase awareness of its strong programs, given Loyola’s many competitors in Chicago and beyond. Working closely with faculty and partners across the civic and corporate sectors, the Dean will apply knowledge of market demand and industry needs to determine new programs to develop and avenues for strengthening and growing existing programs. This will also include capitalizing on alumni expertise and ongoing enthusiasm to be involved in the life of Quinlan to expand opportunities for internships, employment, and continuing education. The Dean will prioritize, incentivize, make objective decisions, and strategically deploy resources to multiple areas as they are needed to grow, with the critical outcome that Quinlan’s academic programs continue to serve Loyola’s mission of greatest social impact.

Advance a supportive, inclusive environment that fosters curiosity and innovation for students, staff, and faculty

Driven by a shared focus on student success, the Dean will partner with faculty and staff to increase cohesion and a sense of belonging for all of the School’s constituents and instill a shared sense of pride to be part of the Quinlan community. The Dean will champion the hiring and retention of new faculty, particularly faculty from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, and strengthen infrastructure that contribute to their success, with a careful balance in the hiring of tenure track and adjunct faculty to best meet the needs of the School. The Dean will also invest in professional development at all levels and foster an environment of growth and achievement for both the individual and the community. The Dean will nurture programs that recruit and support a greater diversity of students and welcome new students who may not have otherwise considered Loyola University Chicago. The Dean will make concerted efforts to increase the number of scholarships and otherwise invest resources to address issues of affordability and access. Finally, the Dean will both advance existing efforts and create new initiatives to specifically support diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels within the School and across the university.

Persuasively advocate for the School while fostering interdisciplinary partnerships

The Dean, serving as chief spokesperson for the School, will advocate for resources at the university level to advance Quinlan’s and Loyola’s joint vision. The Dean will seek out opportunities and secure university leadership support for inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations with other schools, industry partners, governmental and nongovernmental organizations producing mutually beneficial outcomes to bring alive Quinlan’s social impact mission. The Dean will set the cultural tone of the Quinlan School of Business, ensuring that it is seen as a valued and trusted partner across the university in collaborative efforts to foster synergies that increase opportunities for efficiencies, research, student development, and community success.

Strengthen relationships with industry partners, employers, the city of Chicago, and beyond

The Dean will be a bold ambassador for the Quinlan School and Loyola more broadly. By growing the School’s corporate and employment connections, the Dean will continue to close the gap between academia and practice by bringing the business world into the School. The Dean will seek opportunities to be seen and heard locally and beyond, serving as a thought leader to whom others look for expertise and commentary. The Dean will encourage and support faculty and students to seek new external opportunities that enhance the academic and cocurricular experiences. The Dean will deepen significant external relationships, support ongoing partnerships with Chicago businesses, and forge new ones across both the state and the country in order to amplify opportunities for applied research and student internships and employment.

The successful Dean will have a track record of entrepreneurial, transformative leadership that suggests they are able to inspire students, staff, and faculty to commit to a unified, strategic vision which moves the school towards greater prominence as a national leader in social impact in the tradition of Jesuit Catholic business education. While no single candidate will have all of the ideal qualifications, candidates should possess many of the following qualifications and characteristics:
  • Significant senior leadership and administrative experience, preferably in higher education or a large, complex organization;
  • Experience and/or commitment to external fundraising, including in the context of a broader university campaign, or success securing major funding from individual, foundation, government, and/or corporate sources;
  • Strong orientation toward faculty and staff development for excellence in teaching, research, and service;
  • A strong, genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with a track record of individual action leading inclusive and ethical initiatives in a complex organization;
  • An entrepreneurial and visionary mindset, proven track record of impactful innovation, and willingness to take calculated risks to best serve students, staff and faculty in a rapidly evolving marketplace;
  • Passion for the mission of Loyola and a strong understanding of and willingness to support the values of a Jesuit, Catholic education;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills. Poised, patient professional manner in speaking and listening, and the ability to communicate clearly and empathetically in a manner that promotes open, respectful, and honest dialogue;
  • Ability to continuously secure university leadership support and secure resources from the upper administration;
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills and a history of instilling a positive, collaborative organizational culture within a complex organization or institution;
  • A solid grasp of current and emerging issues impacting today’s business education, research, career, and continuing education markets; and
  • An established record of university teaching, scholarship, or distinguished university, professional, and community/public service sufficient to merit appointment as a member of the faculty with tenure.
