Transportation Research Center
The University of Kansas Transportation Center (KUCR) is hiring a postdoctoral researcher to support the Kansas Local Technical Assistance Program (Kansas LTAP) and transportation engineering-related research within the KUTC and the Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) Department.
The position involves working with other LTAP staff to provide surface transportation technical safety solutions for county and city public works agencies in Kansas as a part of the Kansas LTAP program. They will represent the KUTC with key transportation organizations that are stakeholders in the technology transfer products and services of the KUTC. They will also manage and maintain the KUTC’s inventory of data collection and other items available through the equipment loan program.
The Road Safety Resource Coordinator will also assist staff of the KUTC and researchers in the CEAE Department to collect and analyze relevant traffic data, and will create/assist in completion of research reports to project sponsors. Depending on the needs of the specific research project, these data could be traffic volume and speed data, occupancy, transit ridership, crash records, or other data.
This position requires strong transportation safety skills, including experience working with pertinent transportation manuals and guidebooks such as: The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, The Roadside Design Guide, and A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets. The Road Safety Resource Coordinator will on occasion need to travel to fulfill these duties.
Position is limited-term with a typical duration of 1-5 years. Individuals who have served as postdoctoral fellow/researcher for up to five years in the same area of research are not eligible.
50% - Assist staff of the KUTC and researchers in the Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering Department to collect and analyze relevant traffic data. Depending on the needs of the specific research project, these data could be traffic volume and speed data, occupancy, transit ridership, crash records, or other data. It is expected that much of these data collection efforts could require fieldwork at locations across Kansas, which may require additional travel as needed, and may be in addition to the travel required for the Kansas Local Technical Assistance Program (Kansas LTAP) discussed below.
10% - Prepare reports and manuscripts suitable for stakeholders and publication in technical journals.
10% - Manage and maintain the KUTC’s inventory of data collection and other items available through the equipment loan program.
10% - Work with the KUTC Communications and Outreach Coordinator to develop road safety and maintenance briefs, fact sheets, and articles suitable for distribution by Kansas LTAP.
10% - Assist the Kansas LTAP local field liaison as needed. Tasks may include: safety engineering analysis, identification of low-cost safety improvements, answering inquiries from local agencies, distribution of relevant technology transfer materials, and developing reports.
5% - Represent the KUTC with key transportation organizations that are stakeholders in the technology transfer products and services of the KUTC.
5% - Other duties as assigned.

- Must be available and willing to perform occasional overnight travel.
Required QualificationsDoctoral degree conferred at the time of appointment, not to exceed six months from the date of hire, in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field.Experience working with pertinent transportation manuals and guidebooks such as The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, The Roadside Design Guide, and A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets.Experience collecting, analyzing, and documenting transportation data of one or more of the following types: traffic volume and speed data, occupancy, transit ridership, crash records, or other data.
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the Ph.D. conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree, the appointment will be extended to its full duration.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with technical writing in one or more of the following areas: transportation engineering, highway safety, local road maintenance, or transportation operationsExperience with establishing priorities in a complex technical environment with competing responsibilities.Proven record of meeting deadlines.
