Position Description
We are seeking applicants for two post-doctoral fellowship opportunities at Opportunity Insights (OI) at Harvard University to work on projects with Raj Chetty, Nathan Hendren, John Friedman, and other OI collaborators.  These positions include:
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on broad OI projects pertaining to economic opportunity and mobility.
  • Health Economics Research Fellow to work on growing OI research in health economics and health equality, with a general focus on how public policy can improve the health and financial security of low-income populations and to support work on a recently awarded National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to measure the association between income, race, and mortality.

Appointments to begin July 1, 2022, renewable for a second year based on mutual agreement.
Opportunity Insights (OI) is a nonpartisan research and policy institute focused on improving economic opportunity.  Founded in 2018, Opportunity Insight has become a nationally- and internationally- recognized leader in the science of economic mobility and in the use of large administrative data to understand and address inequality.  Opportunity Insights has published seminal work on national trends in upward mobility, racial disparities, the role of neighborhoods and higher education in upward mobility, and most recently, the use of private-sector data to understand disparate impacts in the current economic recession and recovery.  To complement this research, Opportunity Insights has developed data resources including the Opportunity Atlas and the Economic Tracker to support evidence-based policy and practice.  To date, OI’s work  has shaped policy discussions at the national and local level, with nearly a dozen of its studies covered on the front pages of major media outlets, such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and cited in congressional testimony and the President’s State of the Union addresses.
Post-doctoral Fellows will work closely with OI co-Directors and other Research Principals.  Candidates should be completing (or have completed) a PhD in relevant fields (as listed below). Fellows will be invited to work on both OI research as well as have time for their own complementary research.
For the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, we invite applications from candidates with a background in applied microeconomic research who would be eager to focus their efforts coauthoring projects with us studying economic opportunity and the determinants of upward mobility in the US. Applicants are expected to have strong analytical skills and also work well in team settings.
For the Health Economics Postdoctoral Fellowship , we invite applications from candidates with a background in economics, public health, statistics, computer science or a related field.  Candidates for this position should have a strong background in econometrics and/or biostatistics and a keen enthusiasm for empirical research in public health and health economics. Applicants are expected to have strong analytical skills and also work well in team settings.
We especially encourage applications from backgrounds under-represented in economics. The positions are fully funded with no teaching requirements. The salary will be competitive with other top post-doctoral positions in economics and health economics.
Applicants should send a letter of interest, their CV, and up to three research papers through the Harvard application portal. Up to three recommendation letters should be sent directly by references in the same manner.
