Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Compensation Manager for University Human Resources (UHR). Under the direction of the Executive Director, Compensation, the Compensation Manager provides proactive oversight of position classification and compensation functions, advancing progressive business practices, streamlined and efficient processes, strong partnerships with the customer base, and service excellence. The duties of this position will include, but will not be limited to, the following areas of responsibility:
- Provides 2nd tier guidance to all operating units regarding classification requests, competency-based job descriptions, classifications for new positions, reclassifications, and union grievances.
- Supports the development, implementation, and administration of university-wide compensation processes by assuring that the classification and compensation structure and systems for staff are reflecting of internal equity and external market competitiveness, and that position classifications are consistent with work unit designations in accordance with negotiated union agreements.
- Supervises compensation staff, developing and maintaining well-articulated compensation guidelines and procedures, communicating in a timely and comprehensive manner, establishing, monitoring, and improving upon performance metrics in accordance with customer needs, and managing workload appropriately. Makes recommendations regarding professional development opportunities to assure that staff skills and knowledge base are current with market.
- Recommends, develops, and implements training programs to aid stakeholders in the interpretation of classification standards, appropriateness of qualifications, such as experience, education, and specialize skills, and appropriateness of essential duties based on the classification.
- Develops unit goals, objectives, and systems to assure efficient and effective delivery of service through streamlined processes to greater aid customers in navigating the compensation process.
- Maintains strong partnerships with customer base, proactively meeting with customers to anticipate classification and compensation needs and establish work plans to address needs.
- Conducts executive level compensation reviews as requested, providing recommendations based upon market trends, competitive practices, and internal and external equity. Reviews salary offers and provides options and recommendations.
- Collaborates with HR partners on salary determination for new hires, promotions, transfers, and other compensation actions by ensuring compliance with bargaining unit agreements and University compensation policies, guidelines, and processes.
- Evaluates external market data and compares to current salary structures to make recommendations on salary structure movement.
- Monitors the faculty pay equity and grievance review processes.
- Provide guidance to business regarding compensation and salary administration as it relates to the compensation policies and bargaining union contracts.
- Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Administration or a related field.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant human resources management experience, including at least five (5) years of prior compensation administration experience.

- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel including advanced formulas, such as if statements, pivot tables, and VLOOKUP required.

- Ability to perform in-depth analytical studies and research, conduct salary surveys and prepare reports.
- Ability to use a high level of judgment and discretion in independently developing solutions to complex and confidential problems.
- Ability to interpret and apply collective negotiations agreements, federal and state laws, and Rutgers policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Masters degree preferred.
- Experience within a higher education or a health care setting.
- Demonstrated HR experience in the public sector or unionized environment is a plus.
- Supervisory experience is a plus.
