The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health.


What You Will Do

As a Postdoctoral Associate, will join teams working to develop, evaluate, and apply models and tools that support dairy cattle management. In particular, you will have the opportunity to work on two projects: (1) Development and interpretation of models to identify clinical and subclinical mastitis in automated milking systems, and (2) Development of a next generation whole dairy farm model to investigate sustainable farming solutions. Your responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with data scientist to develop and interpret our mastitis detection models.
  • Design experiments for future development and evaluation of mastitis detection models.
  • Evaluate model function and simulation outputs for both accuracy and sensitivity to inputs and parameter designation.
  • Develop decision algorithms to manage farm grown feed stocks and feed purchases that simulate on-farm practices and compose detailed documentation for these processes.
  • Compose funding proposals in collaboration with other research leaders.
  • Manage agile program development including a geographically diverse team.
  • Communicate progress and results through preparation of oral presentations, formal scientific manuscripts, and industry articles.


This is a full-time position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a 1-year appointment with possible extension. Future possible extensions depend on funding and performance.
What We Need
We are looking for an individual who has:

  • PhD in Animal Science, Nutrition, Biology, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of the US Dairy system including management, mastitis prevention and detection, and feeding.
  • Good analytical skills, including experience with statistical analyses of large datasets.
  • Must have excellent communication, organization and personal management skills.


Additionally, we prefer someone with:

  • Experience in model development and evaluation methods.
  • Knowledge of time series analysis and machine learning prediction methods.
  • Experience in agile project management.
