Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University invites applications for a position of Research Associate (post-doctoral researcher). This role includes conducting chemistry research projects in the Demir group including but not limited to: 1) Synthesis and development of new single-molecule magnets that have great potential applications in the area of data storage and processing, 2) Small molecule activation with uranium, 3) Specifically, synthesis of new multi-metallic lanthanide and actinide complexes, 4) Advanced characterization including SQUID magnetometry and spectroscopic methods (NMR, EPR, IR), 5) Preparation of organic ligands to be employed in the synthesis of organometallic and coordination compounds of the f-block elements.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in chemistry with graduate or postdoctoral experience in synthetic inorganic chemistry, specifically air-sensitive uranium chemistry.


Desired Qualifications

The candidate should have 1) strong knowledge in synthesis and standard characterization (NMR, IR, Raman, UV-Vis) of air-sensitive uranium coordination compounds. 2) Prior experience in synthetic lanthanide and actinide chemistry. 3) Advanced knowledge in SQUID magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy are a prerequisite. 4) The research associate needs to be familiarized with air-sensitive techniques such as Schlenk line or glovebox techniques. 5) Outstanding teaching and mentoring skills are desirable 6) Ability to work with undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative environment 7) Excellent knowledge of scientific English for speaking, reading and writing is required.
