This is a key position within the lab and will be responsible for planning and execution of experiments in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator. The lab is working closely together with other PI's in Pathology and school of medicine including collaborations with a multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, physicists and clinicians. The qualified candidate will lead the experiments at the bench using cellular systems, animal models and patient samples, prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data, background and significance and experimental design for grant proposals.

The lab focuses on novel mechanisms regulating NF-kB transcription family pathway, role of adaptor proteins such as Sam68 and posttranslational modifications in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune diabetes and cancer.

The key focus of this position is inflammatory bowel disease. The work will involve using experimental techniques ranging from basic molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry, cell culture, patient samples and animal studies. The candidate will work independently. He/she should be competent to read the literature, come up with experimental ideas and protocols, assist with designing and planning of projects and oversee other personnel to carry out research on the assigned project. Expected to apply/secure training fellowships.


  • Conduct experiments to supply scientific data and information as part of a larger project. Studies involve but are not limited to techniques including Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, protein expression, study of patient samples, in vivo studies using animals including IBD models, 3D organoid cultures, flow cytometry, histology, etc.) Analyze data and provide findings and recommendations to the PI based on analysis. Perform/supervise rodent husbandry including breeding, genotyping and maintain an accurate animal database. (37.5%)
  • Plan and execute experiments for research projects designed by the principal investigator and may design experiments independently and in collaboration with the PI. Provide assistance and oversight of staff, post-doctoral scholars, graduate, Masters and undergraduate students ensuring projects are being completed according to the research plan. Advise/Assist in developing improved techniques, project methods, or procedures. (17.5%)
  • Present data and findings at laboratory meetings and scientific meetings, seminars, etc. Prepare manuscripts, and conduct experiments and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. (12.5%)
  • Independently author research projects. Assemble data and make publication-quality figures from analyzed data. With the highest level of integrity and responsible conduct of research, participate in writing manuscripts as a first author and co-author for discoveries from research performed in the lab, together with the PI and other lab members. Assist in manuscript preparation. (10.0%)
  • Assist with and contribute to experiments performed by other lab members, ensuring adequate resources, assisting with experimental design and analysis. Oversee progress of the research projects and provide regular progress reports to the PI; and provide input and recommendation to principal investigator regarding significant developments in research projects. (5.0%)
  • Assist the PI in and independently develop new techniques and protocols. Train lab members on new techniques. (5%)
  • May supervise research assistants and technicians. Supervise the research and technical work performed by other lab members, ensuring proper lab procedures are followed, and their safety, and ensuring adequate resources are provided for lab work. Coordinate trainings for lab members with the EHS, ARC, radioactive and biosafety trainings and others, as needed. (5%)
  • Operate laboratory equipment and maintain their smooth functioning, including inventory, lab organization and maintain certain equipment/facilities. Assist other lab members with general lab maintenance and help oversee and maintain inventory of scientific reagents. Oversee general lab operations including inventory, lab organization and maintain certain equipment/facilities. (5%)
  • Assess, update, and develop new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the lab. (2.5%)

Department: Frequent contact with PI and lab members, may work with other faculty for collaboration of research projects, contact with administrative staff as needed

University: Regular/Occasional contact with other labs for collaboration, Regular/Occasional contact with the Animal Resource Center, Contact with other departments as needed

External: Supply vendors, other institutions, funding agencies, etc. as needed

Students: Undergraduate and graduate student employees working in the lab


No direct supervisory responsibilities. Will train and provide oversight to lab staff and students as instructed by the PI.


Experience: Minimum of 1 to 5 years of related postdoctoral experience required. Experience in preferred field(s) of study preferred with lead author publications.

Education: PhD in life sciences, MD, or DO

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timeline.
  • Must be willing to adjust working hours according to the nature of ongoing experiments and many times work extended hours to finish the experiments. Working on weekends and holidays are required depending on the ongoing experiments and need to accelerate data generation and collections
  • Excellent analytical skills; ability to formulate findings and recommendations from the analysis.
  • Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timeline.

  • Knowledge on bioinformatics, DNA analysis, microarray and RNA seq data mining, MS word, excel, powerpoint, prism, photoshop, etc are essential.

  • Must be able and willing to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and utilize protective gear to protect the health the animals.


Working indoors at workbench, cell culture hood, instrument rooms, both sitting and standing for long time. Working with animals, exposures to regular biohazards (no select agents at present). May include lifting weights that one person can handle or join others for lab organization and moving instruments. Position may include occasional travel for meetings based on securing travel awards, travel between local institutes including CCF, VA, UH and Metro Health. Necessary flexibility is needed to work in early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
