Ames Laboratory invests in the future of science through education programs and mentorships that nurture undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and early career scientists. We are seeking qualified applicants for an Education and Outreach Program Specialist III to manage the education and outreach initiatives of Ames Laboratory, and to connect these initiatives to lab priorities in both program/proposal development, partnerships, and diversity and equity (D & I).

This position will lead outreach programs and initiatives which are designed to promote early interest in STEM fields to K-12 and college students, including but not limited to Science Undergraduate Leadership Internship (SULI), Community College Internship (CCI), Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) and National Science Bowl.

Reporting to the Director of Innovation Partnerships Program, with additional recurring interactions with the Laboratory’s Chief Research Officer, this role will be critical to establishing connections between scientists of the future and our established research scientists. The successful candidate will improve opportunities for under-represented populations and early career scientists by expanding partnerships and strengthening our mentoring program. By serving as a key partner involved in more deeply embedding diversity, inclusion, equity and access into our practices and culture, this position will play a visible role in creating and implementing Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

The successful candidate will have strong communication and collaborative skills to build and maintain mutually beneficial working relationships with a variety of internal and external constituencies, a general understanding of research laboratory functioning, an understanding and appreciation of different cultures as well as cultural differences, knowledge of how a national laboratory operates, and strong knowledge of PC and network systems. Strong and effective written, oral and electronic communication skills, administrative, supervisory and management skills are required. Occasional out-of-state travel is expected with this position. With strong budget and project management skills, this position ensures that the Education and Outreach program meets the overall objectives of Ames Laboratory, the Department of Energy and Iowa State University.
