The Justice Health and Democracy (JHD) Communications Associate at Harvard University’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics (EJSCE) is a new, grant-funded position. At present, the Center has two major strategic initiatives, and the new JHD Communications Associate will work to support one of these—the Justice, Health, and Democracy Initiative.
A collaboration with New America and Brown School of Public Health, the JHD Initiative develops principled, accessible policy guidance, designed for practitioner use, particularly focused on the intersecting problems of public trust, health equity, justice, democratic participation, and political economy, in the U.S. and around the globe. Through the Justice, Health, and Democracy (JHD) Impact Initiative,EJSCE experts, in collaboration with colleagues at New America and Brown, work directly with local leaders and practitioners in a range of professional contexts to clarify overarching policy needs and objectives anchored in ethical principles, and to develop practical approaches to a new social contract that improves people’s lives. The model is multidisciplinary and responsive to the on-the-ground issues that practitioners face. It connects expertise to the needs of practice with “orient-do-learn-do” cycles of research, policy implementation and locally-driven innovation. The model is building an innovative approach to translational work (i.e. making academic expertise accessible to practitioners in real time) for the social sciences and humanities.
The JHD Communications Associate will support the EJSCE primarily through communications and marketing of materials produced by the JHD initiative. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Communications and Development and in consultation with the leadership of the initiative, the Associate will have responsibility for the communications efforts of the JHD. This includes all work products disseminated through the website and social media, and all other printed and online communications. This position also fields media requests from external constituents. Materials will be drafted by the Communications Associate and submitted to the Assistant Director for final approval before dissemination.
The JHD Communications Associate will work closely with the incoming JHD Director of Content & Strategy as well as the communications personnel of the initiative partners – the Brown School of Public Health (2 staff) and New America (3 staff). JHD Initiative members are university faculty, practitioners, and government officials; the Communications Associate will interface with multiple high-level stakeholders. Additionally, the role will interface with internal Harvard constituents at HPAC, communications staff at other University centers and initiatives, and initiative researchers—faculty and postdoctoral fellows—leading the JHD initiative research.
- Website maintenance and content development, including posting of initiative news and scholarship around Harvard and beyond
- Design, copyedit, produce, and disseminate reports and white papers and all other written materials for and produced by the JHD initiative, including press releases
- Manage social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms); develop social media campaigns for dissemination of white papers, road maps, and reports
- Develop and maintain relationships with external media sources—press, podcasters, television—to disseminate and market strategic initiative news and scholarship
- Conduct regular assessment and analysis of communications efforts; report on and make recommendations to manager
At least 3 years of relevant experience, including at least two years of website management or social media content experience. Education beyond high school may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Outstanding oral and written communication skills; diplomacy, sound judgement, and other interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure of competing deadlines; ability to multitask, prioritize, solve complex problems, ability to identify and pursue critical paths toward concrete goals; entrepreneurial spirit and interest in working in a fast-paced start-up environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
Experience with graphic design tools such as InDesign and Photoshop; Demonstrated experience working with external media outlets is desirable.
